When the SMU Mustangs ran through the Pitt Panthers in the Ponies' 28-6 victory in the BBVA Compass Bowl at Legion Field in Birmingham, Ala., it offered further evidence that a consistent program is in place at SMU. The game not only marked the Mustangs' third bowl game in as many years, but it was won thanks in large part to significant contributions from young players who are back in 2012. Add to that the return of running back Zach Line and the arrival of transfer quarterback Garrett Gilbert, and expectations for another bowl appearance abound on the Hilltop. As is the case at the start of any new season, the Mustangs have questions that need to be answered, but there are enough pieces in place and enough hope surrounding some of the new faces that most expect the Ponies to reach the postseason for a fourth consecutive season.
Once again, PonyFans.com presents the largest and most comprehensive season preview for the 2012 Mustangs. Head coach June Jones, his assistant coaches and his players offer their insights about the strengths of the team and who might fill in some of the voids created by graduated and injured players, and what needs to happen for the Ponies to go bowl-ing once more.
Enjoy!
