From what I saw yesterday it's their problem as well. Rivalry games don't struggle to fill 30K stadiums. I know some people want this to be a rivalry but it never will be and the reason is up in those stands.
Would you pay money to watch a game SMU was playing if you weren't an SMU fan right now?
