What does Jimbo Fisher firing mean for recruiting?

Texas A&M reportedly fired head coach Jimbo Fisher Sunday. Whenever there is a coaching change, that leads to questions about recruiting. Will committed recruits have a change of heart? Will players on the current roster jump ship?

The speculation is relevant at SMU, which has been established in recent years as a target destination for players who want to return to the DFW Metroplex, or even want to return to the state of Texas. With that in mind:

Players from Texas who currently are committed to A&M's 2024 class

CB Terry Bussey
Timpson, Texas
5-10.5 / 180

DL Dealyn Evans
Longview (Pine Tree), Texas
6-4.5 / 260

OT Blake Ivy
League City (Clear Springs), Texas
6-3.5 / 280

G/C Coen Echols
Katy, Texas
6-3 / 285

S Myles Davis
Converse (Judson), Texas
6-1 / 185

OT Ashton Funk
Katy (Tompkins), Texas
6-7 / 300

WR Ernest Campbell
Refugio, Texas
5-8 / 150

LB Tyanthony Smith
Jasper, Texas
6-1 / 205

How many current A&M players who went to College Station thinking they would play for Fisher might consider jumping ship? Freshman WR Raymond Cottrell (6-3 / 210) already tweeted his intent to find another school. The school said players have a 30-day window in which to enter their names into the transfer portal.

Some others who previously played in the state of Texas who might be attractive targets, if they choose to move on from College Station:

Soph. DB Bryce Anderson — 6-0/195 — Beaumont (West Brook), Texas (1 catch, 13 yards, 1 TD)
Fresh. RB Rueben Owens — 6-0/200 — El Campo, Texas (70 carries, 232 yards, 3.3 per, 2 TD)
Soph. WR Noah Thomas — 6-6/200 — Pearland, Texas (23 catches, 308 yards, 13.4 per, 4 TD)
Jr DL Shemar — 6-4/290 — DeSoto, Texas (13 tackles, 6 sacks)
Fresh. DB Jayvon Thomas — 6-0/190 — Dallas (South Oak Cliff)
Soph. DL Albert Regis — 6-2/325 — LaPorte, Texas
Fresh. LB Taurean York — 6-0/230 — Temple, Texas
Fresh. LB Daymion Sanford — 6-2/225 — Katy (Paetow), Texas
Fresh. P Tyler White — 6-4/215 — Southlake (Carroll), Texas
Soph. LB Martrell Harris — 6-2/220 — The Woodlands, Texas
Fresh. OL Hunter Erb — 6-6/320 — Newark (Eaton), Texas
Soph. OL Bryce Foster — 6-5/330 — Katy (Taylor), Texas
Fresh. OL Colton Thomason — 6-8/320 — Spring Branch (Smithson Valley), Texas
Fresh. OL Samu Taumanupepe — 6-2/380 — Humble (Atascocita), Texas
Fresh. LB Nana Boadi-Owusu — 6-2/240 — Arlington (Martin), Texas
Soph. DE Malick Sylla — 6-6/240 — Katy, Texas

So ... who would you like to see end up in Dallas?

DL & OL players are going to have to be targets in the portal if SMU is going to be competitive next year in the ACC. Our young guys need time to mature before they can be counted on to contribute significantly

This goes beyond TAMU.

Down seasons at TCU, Baylor, UH and Arky, combined with our move to the ACC give us the opportunity to sway some previously committed high quality HS recruits and to utilize the portal to replace our senior starters and add quality depth to the team.

Agree that we need more OL and DL beef, but would love to see additions at LB and DB, as well. Symons has proven himself to be an excellent DC and I'd like to see him with elite talent on that side of the ball.

Let’s win the AAC and keep the momentum going!

Winning this week at Memphis and running the table by beating either Tulane or UTSA in the AAC Title game is critical to attracting impact talent via the portal for next year...not to mention our NIL efforts. Pony Up!

Linemen are always important, but especially this year — defense is losing Levelston, Chatman, Miller and Paul. Offense is losing White and Osborne ... at least.

Based on what we have seen from this staff, I'd assume they're working hard to pry some commits from other schools. Bring them on.

From the original list, wasn't SMU in the running pretty late for Owens?
