UNCG makes its second straight trip to the NCAA Round of 16

GREENSBORO, NC – The UNC Greensboro men’s soccer team will host Southern Methodist on Sunday in the third round of the NCAA Tournament this weekend at UNCG Soccer Stadium beginning at 1 pm.

Boasting a 16-5-1 overall record and an unblemished 5-0 record in postseason play dating back to the quarterfinals of the SoCon Tournament, the Spartans earned their trip to the NCAA Tournament after collecting an automatic bid following a 2-1 win over Davidson in the finals of the SoCon Tournament.

UNCG then went on to oust James Madison 3-2 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at UNCG Soccer Stadium. Junior Mike Richardson netted the game’s first goal and Hermann Award finalist Randi Patterson added a pair of goals before the Dukes scored two late goals to pull within in one with less than 30 seconds remaining in the contest. James Madison would get no closer, however, as the Spartans played boom ball to run out the final ticks and advance to the second round.

In second round action, the Spartans traveled to Virginia Tech to face the No. 12 seed Hokies at Virginia Tech Soccer Stadium Tuesday evening. In a match where UNCG controlled virtually all the play, the Spartans failed to score a goal despite outshooting the homestanding Hokies 21-11. Led by senior keeper Jay Benfield’s two diving saves, the Spartans advanced to the round of 16 after eliminating Virginia Tech by a 4-3 mark in penalty kicks.

SMU’s (12-5-3) path to the third round began with a 2-1 home win over San Francisco in first round action. The Mustangs followed that victory with a 3-0 upset win at No. 5 seed UCLA Tuesday evening in Los Angeles. SMU has competed in the NCAA Tournament for 12 consecutive seasons.

Sunday’s matchup with SMU will be the second consecutive season the Spartans have reached the NCAA Round 16, dropping last year’s contest with eventual national runner-up UC Santa Barbara 1-0 in overtime at UNCG Soccer Stadium. The game also marks the first time in the Division I era that UNCG has won two consecutive games in the NCAA Tournament. Last season UNCG earned a first round bye, therefore needing just one win to advance to the Round of 16.

UNCG made seven trips to the Division III NCAA Tournament, where it won five national championships (1982, 1983, 1985, 1986, 1987). In its brief two-year stint as a Division II member, UNCG reached the NCAA Tournament twice and made an appearance in the 1989 title game.

The UNCG-SMU winner will face the winner of the No. 4 seed North Carolina-Virginia contest. North Carolina and Virginia kickoff Sunday at 1 pm at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill. Tickets for the Sunday match with SMU are $7 for general admission and $5 for all students and senior citizens.
