Women's swimming and diving hires new assistant coach

DALLAS (SMU) - Dominique Diezi has been named SMU assistant women's swimming and diving coach, as announced on Thursday. She replaces Christie Shefchunas, who spent the last four seasons with the Mustangs and recently took the head coaching job at the University of Miami.
A native of Zurich, Switzerland, Diezi joins the Mustangs with an impressive coaching and swimming career.
"I'm incredibly excited about joining a school and swimming program as
prestigious as SMU," Diezi said. "This is something I have always dreamed
of!"
With a degree in Economics and International Studies from Northwestern University in 2001, Diezi is an ESL teacher for adults and children. Aside from English and German, she also speaks French and Spanish. She was the assistant coach at University of Louisville in 2002-2003, and after her college swimming career at Northwestern University. She served as the volunteer assistant coach at her alma mater from 2000-2001.
A member of the Switzerland's National team from 1992-2004, Diezi competed in the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, four World Championships, two World University Games and several European Championships. She currently holds several national records in various sprint events.
During her collegiate career at Northwestern, Diezi was a member of the All-Big Ten team from 1997-2000 and won 15 All-American honors. She currently holds school records in the 100 back and three different relays at Northwestern.
An exemplary student, Diezi was named Academic All-Big Ten from 1998-2000 and was an Academic All-American from 1997-1999. Named to the school's Dean's List in 1999-2000, she was named to the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Academic All-American team (1997-98).
"We are excited to have Dominique join the SMU program," head coach Steve Collins said. "Dominique brings a great deal of International and NCAA experience to our program. We are fortunate to have a former NCAA All-American and two-time Olympian with strong coaching credentials."
