The use of the word "libero" has been traditionally used in world soccer to designate the defensive stopper normally the sweeper position. I assume volleyball must have taken it from soccer if that term is used.

Jay Needham is not a libero, and he's not a midfielder, despite what the roster says. He's a defender, and a damn good one.

Many soccer teams today play without a sweeper (libero) because of the use of defensive mid fielders Where a sweeper is used he normally plays behind a single center back and has the freedom to roam behind the defense.
