Score says it all. Totally dominating performance. Schellas played the entire bench except for three roster freshman I understand will probably redshirt. Four other freshman are not on the roster and are redshirting. The "second team" so to speak played the majority of the game. Schellas played Jeff Harwell at attacking midfielder for a good part of the game and he played very well. Steve Sandbo played keeper the second half but was not tested. Sandbo was the starter last year until he injured his foot and Matt Wideman took over for the remainder of the season and the tournament. In the Spring, Sandbo played keeper for the national under 20 team but never really got over his foot injury. Sandbo had surgery to remove a fractured bone in the foot and Schellas decided to go with Wideman at keeper this year. Of course, he has played lights out. I understand that Sandbo's foot will not be fully recovered until next year but he can play as a back up. Unfortunately, we will not be able to see this team play again until October 7, when it returns from a long away schedule. The team is really fun to watch. A decent crowd for a Tuesday night.

Amazing, the score of tonights game got a mention on NBC Dallas Channel 5 sports tonight including a reference to the fact that SMU is ranked # 1 in the country.

Wow, finally some local recognition!! We left the game at half, I saw all I needed to see. I'm glad we handed this team the beating they deserved after the exhibition loss last spring.

The spring beating meant nothing. Centenary doesn't have a player who could make the SMU roster, much less start. I didn't see that exhibition game, but the Gents and the Ponies don't belong on the same field. Frankly the game was almost boring -- the Ponies were completely unchallenged. But it was good to get more than just a couple of minutes for the backups.
New Mexico (another 2005 College Cup team) awaits, guys -- go kick their tails.

Not really, which was sad -- the first game as the No. 1 team in the country, but Tuesday night and a non-existent opponent added up to a tiny crowd.

EVERYONE needs to come out and see them when they get back home. The next home game is at 7 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 7 against a very solid Kentucky team. Come out and check these guys out.

DALLAS -- The No. 1 team in the country lived up to the billing Tuesday, as Southern Methodist University (7-0-0) shut out the Centenary men’s soccer team (1-5-0), 8-0, at Westcott Field, in Dallas.

Ranked No. 1 nationally (NSCAA/Adidas), SMU exploded for a season-high eight goals against the Gents Tuesday, led by two goals and two assists by senior Chase Wileman.

Wileman put the Mustangs ahead in the first 10 minutes of the contest, scoring his first goal of the season in the 8th minute.

The senior midfielder had a hand in SMU’s second goal of the game, scored by sophomore Scott Geppert in the 23rd minute. Attacking the Centenary net, Wileman dished the ball to Geppert, who held onto the ball long enough to pull junior Donnie Henderson (Houston/Westfield) out of the net and place an angled shot into the goal for his second tally of the season.

Geppert would score his second goal of the contest just 10 minutes later, heading a cross in from junior Scott Corbin in the 33rd minute.

SMU held the 3-0 lead into the half, however the scoring floodgates opened for the Mustangs following the intermission, as SMU would score five second-half goals.

Sophomores Richard Oliva and Manuel Mariel, along with senior Jay Needham and freshman Jaime Benitez had goals for SMU in the second half.

Although scoring eight goals, the stout SMU defense showed its muscle, registering the sixth shutout of the season for the Mustangs.

Playing just a half, senior goalkeeper Matt Wideman picked up the win for the Mustangs, combining with junior Steve Sanbo for the shutout.

Centenary opens Mid-Continent Conference play Saturday, traveling to Oakland University for a 12 p.m. game at Oakland Soccer Field.

If I'm not mistaken, the Ponies allowed just one shot on goal (and a weak one, at that). I don't care who you're playing, that's seriously impressive.

Our two keepers were never tested during the game as the majority of the play was on Centenary's side of the line. Our midfield and backs simply controled and dominated the flow of the play. Interesting that Centenary took South Carolina to the brink before losing by a goal in the last several minutes.
