DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's soccer team breaks into the national rankings this week as Soccer America.com ranks the Mustangs at #22. ** In this week's national stats, SMU 1s ranked 23rd in the nation in scoring offense, 19th in win-loss-tie percentage and 20th in shutout percentage. Individually, senior forward Olivia O'Rear is 27th in goals per game.
** Last week, the Mustangs held an RPI of #16 in the nation, which is the highest in Conference USA. SMU also holds the top record in the Central Region (ahead of Texas, Texas A&M, and Oklahoma).

Great news and well deserved!

Big weekend coming up with a road trip to UH and Rice. Definitely need to keep the momentum going. Will be a huge plus going into conference tournament with a perfect record. Like the SMU men everyone in Conference USA is gunning for them as they are the cream of the crop.

How does the RPI rank compared to other regional "powers"?

Absolutely, the Mustangs are the cream of the crop in C-USA, and peaker is right -- this will be a very tough road trip. Rice has a very solid team, and UH is always a very tough, physical team against which to play. Go get 'em, Ponies!

The coaches poll is out and the love fest with the Big 12 and the Eastern Division of the SEC continues.

Regionally the coaches still rank Colorado above the Ponies, even after they lost two games on their home field last week. The one common oppenent for both UC and SMU was Ole Miss and both schools were victorious albeit in different venues (home/away). And I can not understand the absolute love affair with Texas. I guess they consider the loss to Rice a fluke and a home tie to arguably the third best women's team in Oklahoma (OU) something to be ignored.

Which brings me to Vandy and Tennessee. They are both fine squads but I question including them in the CENTRAL rankings when their conference division is the EASTERN Division of the SOUTHEASTERN Conference.

By the way, the SMU ladies are 3 - 0 against the SEC so far this year.

The women will just have to prove it to the Big 12 snobs in their remaining conference games and the NCAA tournament.

Per the CUSA website:

The Mustangs currently sport the best record in the Central Region, ahead of Texas, Texas A&M and Oklahoma.

SMU women beat a very respectable Rice team by 5-1 on Sunday afternoon in Houston.

5-1 ?!?!?

That's really good -- Rice is supposed to be a strong team, and their goalkeeper keeps getting a lot of pub.

Way to go, Ponies!
