Women's soccer climbs to No. 18 in adidas/NSCAA poll

Ponies on 11-game winning streak

October 24, 2006

For the second straight week, the SMU women’s soccer team is ranked among the top 25 in four national soccer polls. The Mustangs, with a record of 14-2-1, moved up from the No. 22 spot to the No. 18 spot in the adidas/NSCAA poll released on Tuesday.

SMU is 22nd in this week’s Soccer Times.com College Coaches poll, 15th in the Soccer America.com poll, and 20th in the Soccer Buzz.com poll.

The Mustangs, under the direction of fourth-year head coach John Cossaboon, have won their last 11 games, outscoring their opponents, 28-6, in that span. SMU totals 11 shutout victories this season, seven were earned during the current winning streak.

The Mustangs hold a perfect 7-0 Conference USA record going into the final weekend of the regular season. A win at UCF Friday evening would clinch SMU’s 11th regular-season conference title - and its second consecutive Conference USA crown.

Cossaboon believes that much of SMU’s success this season is due to the quartet of seniors -- Olivia O’Rear, Susanne Collins, Morgan Field, and Ashley Watson -- on the Mustang squad, who have made the most of their final collegiate season. In addition, junior defender Alyssa Pembroke, who was the recipient of a medical redshirt for the 2005 season, brings extensive experience which blends perfectly with the Mustang seniors.

“This group has been amazing,” states Cossaboon. “These players
are lifting SMU women’s soccer to an entirely different level of success and it starts on how they approach practice to their actions on the field. They are laying the groundwork for future generations of SMU soccer by doing what needs to be done and the commitment it takes to reach the elite status in collegiate women’s soccer. I am so very proud of this group.”
