"Well done" is right. Ponies won the Conference USA regular season title last night with a 1-0 win over Marshall at Westcott Field. Two ways to look at last night's game:

WRONG WAY:
Marshall is awful, and the Ponies should have beaten them by a more lopsided score.

RIGHT WAY:
Ponies did enough to survive and win the conference title, and quite frankly, survival is important at this point, especially on the offensive end. Forwards Scott Geppert and Paulo da Silva were still out of the lineup, and Geppert is done for the year after having reconstructive surgery on his ACL. More importantly, the Thundering Herd played as if its only chance to stay in the game was to put more Ponies on the shelf with da Silva and Geppert. They had a guy ejected for sliding in spikes-up on SMU's Jeff Harwell, in what only could be viewed as an intention to break Harwell's leg rather than actually playing the ball. Adrian Chevannes was taken about by a similar tackle.

All told, Marshall had five cards (one red, four yellow), and little else. The SMU defense was exceptional again, snuffing out the few Marshall offensive pushes so completely that GK Matt Wideman almost could have taken the night off.

The Herd looked like it couldn't decide whether to cripple all the Ponies in hope of an upset, or simply to pack all 11 players back on defense in the hope of not getting embarrassed by an SMU team that was superior at every position. Either way, despite the close score, SMU completely outclassed its guests, in terms of talent and the way they went about the game. If there's any justice, Marshall (currently seeded ninth in the conference) will not back into the eight-team C-USA tournament.

Most importantly: despite the Herd's best efforts, the Ponies didn't suffer any new major injuries, and SATURDAY'S WIN WAS THE 450TH WIN IN THE CAREER OF SMU HEAD COACH SCHELLAS HYNDMAN.

Congratulations, Coach!

Hopefully, we go through the CUSA tournament like a hot knife through butter and get a 1 seed. I'd like to play at home for the first three rounds of the NCAA tournament. As far as underperforming against Marshall and their physical game, what better warm-up for the NCAA tournament which teams send hatchet men out for just such reasons. Remember our game with St. Johns.

St. John's was physical when it beat us a few years ago, but not dirty. This year's SMU team can handle physical play more than any team I can remember in years, thanks to guys like Jay Needham, Ryan Mirsky, Mynor Gonzalez, Jeff Harwell and Ben Shuleva .... a transfer, ironically, from St. John's. If teams want to bring the rough stuff, SMU will be ready.
