No. 1 seed Mustangs face No. 8 Tulsa Wednesday at noon in C-USA Tournament

Oct. 29, 2006

Hattiesburg, Miss. - The 18th-ranked SMU women's soccer team captured the 2006 Conference USA women's soccer regular-season title Sunday after posting a 2-1 road victory over Southern Miss Sunday afternoon in Hattiesburg, Miss. SMU earns the title outright after UCF tied Tulsa, 1-1, Sunday in Orlando. It is SMU's seventh consecutive regular-season league title and 11th overall. With the win, SMU improves to 15-3-1 (8-1 C-USA) while the Golden Eagles fall to 4-13-1 overall (0-9 C-USA).

Midway in the first half, SMU got on the scoreboard as junior Brittainy Vice scored her first goal of the season off an assist to junior Kimber Bailey.

The Mustangs went up, 2-0, in the 36th minute as junior Jena Lind scored off an assist to Caitlin Carter. SMU held that 2-0 lead until the 53:50 mark as USM's Sarah Brennan scored an unassisted goal.

As the top seed in the 2006 C-USA Women's Soccer Championships, SMU will face No. 8 seed Tulsa Wednesday at 12:00 p.m. in the first day of the tournament on Wednesday, Nov. 1, at Westcott Field on the campus of SMU.

What marketing genius at Conference USA schedules the host team in the middle of the day and then, if they continue, play the early game on a Friday night?

I was under the impression it was the choice of the top-seeded team's coach. Is that not true?

Winning the conference tournament should ensure a home game or two in the NCAAs, shouldn't it?

It appears that there are 32 women's teams. So given our current ranking and assuming the usual disrespect for SMU by seedsters and assuming we win CUSA, my guess is that we'll be seeded below 16 which means an away game.

On the mens side if you are a top 16 seed you get one home game and a bye. Top 8 seed, two home games and a bye. Top 4 seed, three home games and a bye. Obviously, I'm hoping for a top 4 seed, but fully expect a 17 seed.

EastStang is partially right. There are 64 teams in the women's tourney with 16 first round sites. Correct on being a top 16 seed to host.

Unfortunately for SMU, tamu & ut will probably have higher seeds and given the NCAA's penchant to keep a lid on travel costs, the ladies will once again be placed in one of their sites. There is always hope that with a CUSA win, the NCAA seeds all 3 top Texas based teams and we will get a first round site at Westcott.

Where do fans park for the Wednesday game? Will the Meadows garage be available? This was a big question raised by visitors at the UTSA game that was played sometime back on a Friday afternoon.

I don't disagree with you, but I checked the NCAA website and it showed 16 first round games and 8 second round games. Which would indicate a 32 team draw. If there were two rounds of 16 games that would indicate a 48 team draw. If there was one round of 32 then one round of 16 that would indicate 64 teams. Maybe I misread it. Either way, I trust the NCAA to seed us in such a way that we don't get a home game.
