CONFERENCE USA WOMEN’S SOCCER AWARDS ANNOUNCED

O’Rear, Gunter, Beans and Higashiyama Take Top Individual Awards

IRVING, Texas – Conference USA announced its 2006 all-conference first and second teams and postseason award winners for women’s soccer today, as selected by the conference’s head women’s soccer coaches. The awards are announced one day before the start of the 12th Annual C-USA Championship, which is scheduled for Wednesday through Sunday, Nov. 1-5, at Westcott Field on the campus of SMU in Dallas, Texas.

SMU, the top-seeded team in the Championship, produced both the Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year award winners. Senior forward OLIVIA O’REAR enters the championship with 29 points and 16 in C-USA regular season matches. Sophomore goalkeeper ASHLEY GUNTER repeats as a C-USA first team selection and earns Defensive Player of the Year honors after posting nine shutouts this season. Teammate CARLEY PHILLIPS was the third Mustang on the All-Conference USA first team and SMU head coach JOHN COSSABOON was named the C-USA Coach of the Year.

Colorado College, making its debut in Conference USA this season as an affiliate member, produced the 2006 Freshman of the Year with EMILY BEANS. The rookie forward led her team, and ranks sixth in C-USA, with 26 points. Beans also tied for first with a league-best six goals in conference regular season matches this season. She earned a spot on the All-Conference USA second team and All-Freshman squad.

Memphis sophomore midfielder MAIKO HIGASHIYAMA garners the league’s inaugural Newcomer of the Year honor, after transferring to the Tigers team this season from Martin Methodist. Higashiyama was also named to the All-Conference USA first team, along with teammate SHOKO MIKAMI.

UCF also produced a pair of first-team selections in junior forward ROBERTA PELARIGO and sophomore midfielder HANNA WILDE. Houston midfielder SOPHIA MUNDY, Rice defender BETH MARTIN, East Carolina defender KAT NORRIS and Colorado College defender MOLLY UYENISHI rounded out the All-Conference USA first team.
