The No. 20 SMU men's swim and dive team was upset by No. 24 BYU this weekend 133-108. The Mustangs didn't make the win easy for the Cougars.

Senior Ian Clark notched two place finishes on Friday in the 100 yd. backstroke and the 200 yd. individual medley while junior Alex Hetland took first in both the 100 yd. butterfly and the 100 yd. breaststroke.

BYU took first in the opening race, the 200 yd. medley relay, with a time of 1:31.00. The Cougars won the next three events: Chad Fong in the 1000 yd. freestyle, Travis Price in the 200 yd. freestyle and Brett Allen in the 50 yd. freestyle.

Mustangs Shane Milu and Maverick Smalley took second and third behind Price in the 200 yd. freestyle with times of 1:41.49 and 1:41.60, respectively. SMU placed second, fourth and fifth in the 50 yd. freestyle with Vrtovec clocking in at 20.63, Jani Brackett at 22.01 and Merritt rounding out the field at 22.16.

In the diving portion of the competition, BYU had three divers while SMU only had one. Freshman Preston Holcombe took third in the one-meter diving event with a total score of 268.20. In the three-meter event, Holcombe finished second with a score of 312.45.

The 200 yd. freestyle relay event ended the night with BYU's team of Jorge Arrevedo, Chris Patience, Mark Chay and Travis Price taking first with a time of 1:23.14.

The Mustang relay team of Milu, Smalley, Justin Smith and Brackett finished in second place just behind the Cougars at 1:25.03.

The Mustangs hit the water again Nov. 11 to face former Mustang swimmers in the Varsity-Alumni meet. SMU's next collegiate event is the Texas A&M Invitational in College Station Nov. 17-19.
