SMU start off season with win

DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's tennis team started their season off on a good note with a sweep of UTSA, 5-0. The Mustangs are 1-0 on the season as their earlier match this morning against UTA was canceled.
"The girls showed a lot of fight," head coach Lauren Longbotham said. "We came out and executed the game plan. I was very proud of their effort today."
The doubles competition was just underway when the rain began to fall so the teams waited out the weather. Once the courts dried, the teams pick-up where they left off and the hour delay did not seem to bother the Mustangs. The No. 2 doubles team of Monica Neveklovska and Kristen Reid swept Holly Phillips and Monika Drabkova, 8-0. Jennifer Chay and Pavi Francis took a controlling win over Kukla Sandra and San Paula Soto Anton at the No. 3 doubles, 8-1. Natalia Bubien and Claire Rietsch took care of Tanya Hasking and Karen Scida at the No. 1 position, 8-4.
As the temperature began to drop the Mustangs singles kicked up their intensity. At No. 1 singles, Bubien dominated Scida, 6-0, 6-1 while Francis controlled Soto-Anton at the No. 5 spot, 6-1, 6-2. Rietsch took a 6-3, 6-1 win over Hasking at No. 3, securing the Mustang win. Neveklovska quickly followed with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Eva Silvester at the No. 6 spot. Chay was leading Kukla at No. 2, 6-3 and Marta was leading Drabkova, 6-5, but neither match finished.
The Mustangs will head out on their first road trip this year heading to Louisville, Ky., where they will take on Troy Feb. 3 and Louisville Feb. 4.
