WOMEN'S TENNIS WINS 4-3 AGAINST ARKANSAS...

NOW 15-4 FOR THE SEASON!

Francis clinches win at No. 4 singles

April 3, 2007

DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's tennis team edged Arkansas this afternoon, 4-3. After dropping the doubles point, the Mustangs rallied to win four singles matches to take the win, advancing their win-streak to seven and their season record to 15-4.

"That was a good win," said head coach Lauren Longbotham. "I was not to pleased with the doubles. I think we came out a little flat. We need to have a better start in doubles to set the tone for the rest of the match. Before singles I challenged the girls to fight for a goal that was bigger than themselves and to use this match as momentum for the rest of the month."

In doubles, Natalia Bubien and Claire Rietsch fell to Nanar Airapetian and Maryori Franco at No. 1, 8-5, but Monica Neveklovska and Kristen Reid evened the playing field when they took a, 8-4, win over Melissa Hoffmeister and Rachel Wilhelm at No. 3. The Mustangs were not able to pull out the doubles point as Pavi Francis and Jennifer Chay fell to Ela Kaluder and Audrey Bordeleau at No. 2, 8-3.

After dropping the doubles point, the Mustangs rallied through the singles competition. Reid quickly took care of business as she commanded a, 6-0, 6-3, win over Hoffmeister at No. 6 singles and Chay was able to put the Mustangs ahead with a, 6-1, 6-3, win over Franco at No. 2. Rietsch powered past Airapetian at No. 3, 6-1, 6-3, bringing the overall score to 3-1. At No. 1, Bubien was unable to top Kaluder as she fell, 6-0, 3-6, 6-0, and Georgiana Marta was unable to get past Wilhelm as she fell, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 5. The decision came down to the No. 4 match between SMU's Francis and Bordeleau. Francis remained strong and pulled together for the, 7-5, 6-4, clinching win.

"In singles, Chay and Rietsch came out and dominated at their slots and did exactly what the team needed them to do. I was very excited to see Reid come alive again and play to her potential. Francis was outstanding in her fight to clinch the match. I told her that we needed her match and she took that challenge and ran with it."

SMU has a short break as they return to the courts tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. against UT-Pan Am. The Mustangs will play at Bent Tree Country Club alongside the SMU men's team as both the men and women play UT-Pan Am tomorrow.
