Mustangs Down UTEP, 7-0
SMU will carry 11-match win streak into C-USA Championships

April 14, 2007

DALLAS (SMU) - The No. 48 SMU women's tennis team kept their win streak alive today as they downed UTEP, 7-0, and snapped the Miners's six-match win streak. The Mustangs posted one of their best overall season records as they advanced to 19-4 on the season. This year's 11-match win streak heading into the Conference USA Championship betters the 10-match win streak the Mustangs rode into last season Championship. Before today's match, the Mustangs honored their two seniors, Jennifer Chay and Georgiana Marta.

"Today was bitter sweet for us because it was a great way to finish the regular season but sad see our seniors play their last home match," said head coach Lauren Longbotham. "Both Georgiana (Marta) and Jennifer (Chay) have played a huge role in the success of this team both on the court and as leaders off the court."

"We feel really confident going into Conference. Today's energy level and focus proved that we can play up to our potential and we want to use this energy and focus going into the Conference Championship. Thanks to all the fans who have supported us this season."

Monica Neveklovska and Kristen Reid paired for the first Mustang win and their sixth consecutive victory as they downed Samantha Attard and Amber Brightly at No. 3 doubles, 8-2. Pavi Francis and Jennifer Chay sealed the doubles point with an 8-4 win over Isabela Kulaif and Marina Deluca at No. 2 while Natalia Bubien and Claire Rietsch completed the sweep in doubles taking the 8-3 decision from Weronika Bloczynska and Megan Pritchard at No. 1.

In singles, Reid commanded a, 6-1, 6-2, victory over Pritchard at No. 5 and Francis notched her ninth consecutive win as she defeated Palider, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 4. Bubien powered past Bloczynska at No. 1, 6-3, 6-1, clinching the Mustang win. Earning her 10th consecutive win, Rietsch posted a, 6-2, 6-1, win over Deluca at the No. 3 spot.

Also advancing her singles win streak, Chay posted eight-straight wins as she played solid to defeat Kulaif at No. 2, 6-4, 4-6, 10-3. Marta rallied past Attard at the No. 6 spot to seal the Mustang sweep as she took the, 6-4, 6-7, 10-7, win. Neveklovska also battled it out at No. 7 singles as she cruised to a, 6-4, 6-1, win over Harmonie Chatagner.

Up next for SMU is the Conference USA Championships, April 19-22, in Tulsa, Okla. hosted by the University of Tulsa. Championship brackets will announced on Tues., April 17, following the release of the latest FILA-ITA rankings. The Mustangs are looking at one of the top two seeds in the Championships.

At a 48 ranking, I would still bet that they have to win CUSA to make it into the NCAA tourney.
