Under 20 national team vis a vis SMU

Postby mustangbill67 » Sun Jul 15, 2007 2:28 pm

The US Under 20 national team was truly a beautiful team to watch play. Tons of skill and speed and creative playmaking. Freddy Adu and Josy Altidore are the future of US national team soccer. However, watching the US fall to Austria yesterday in the Under 20 world cup quarterfinals brought back painful memories of the SMU-UC Santa Barbara game last fall. As with the US team, SMU with all its skill, speed and creativity loses to a big, physical but somewhat slower and less skillful CA team. It all comes down to finishing. You can create numerous creative scoring opportunities and clearly be the better team, but unless you stick the ball in the back of the net, it means nothing. It is very frustrating. Hopefully, with the guys we have coming back and the new recruits, this will be our year.

Unfortunately the NCAA tournament is foul central and as in most sports the more physical team wins. If we can avoid injuries to our "enforcers" we ought to do fine.
