Sad News - Jimmy Benedek passes
Posted: Tue Mar 31, 2009 8:28 pmLate yesterday, I heard through email that SMU's first soccer coach, Jimmy Benedek passed away Monday after a battle with cancer. I hope I am not violating any confidence by reporting this news, but I figure there are some folks here who would want to know.
Jimmy laid the groundwork for the success of SMU's soccer team and was loved by his players. We all have funny stories about Jimmy and his quirks, but he was a great coach and his efforts lead to SMU's national recognition in soccer. From what I hear a memorial service is in the works. I wish I could be more eloquent in speaking of Jimmy, and even though I hadn't seen him much in the last 20 years, I will miss him, as will all his guys. SMU was lucky to have had him as our first soccer coach and I can say I was honored to have played for him.
