Kate Ackerson named to C-USA All-Academic Team
SMU senior captures third straight honor

IRVING, Texas - The 2009 Conference USA Women’s Golf All-Academic Team includes one senior, three juniors and two sophomores, as announced by the league office today. The all-academic team consists of student-athletes who have earned a 3.2 cumulative grade point average or better and are a regular participant on their team.

Lone senior Kate Ackerson of SMU received a unanimous vote to the 2009 C-USA Women’s Golf All-Academic Team. Ackerson, a three-time all-academic selection, is also a three-time NGCA All-America Scholar and a two-time ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District member. The Allen, Texas native is also a four-time C-USA Academic Medal winner and member of the C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll. Ackerson has been selected to the All-C-USA team three times and is a three-time C-USA Golfer of the Week honoree. The business major holds a 3.87 GPA and took medalist honors at the 2009 Baylor Invitational earlier this spring.

The junior duo of East Carolina’s Abby Bools and UTEP’s Deborah Martinez both pick up their second-consecutive C-USA All-Academic team honor. Bools, a history major with a minor in communications has a 3.74 GPA while continuing to make her mark in ECU history. The Hickory, N.C., native currently owns the sixth-best single-season average in ECU history at 75.35. Bools is a five-time ECU Director of Athletics Honor Roll member and a three-time C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll and NGCA All-American Scholar.

Martinez, a three-time C-USA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll and a member of UTEP’s SAAC, leads the Miners with a 76.5 stroke average despite having to miss the Miners last two tournaments with a broken wrist. The economics major was a third-team C-USA selection in 2008 and owns a 3.38 GPA.

Marshall’s Larie Lynch is a marketing major with a 3.82 GPA. She is the top golfer for the Thundering Herd, posting an average round of 75.5 strokes thus far in 2008-09. Her top round of the season came in the UAB Fall Beach Blast in November where Lynch posted a 74 and notched a top-15 finish.

Sophomore transfer Linn Gustafsson entered her first year in C-USA and tied the Tulane school record for the lowest round with a five-under-par 67 during her final round at the LSU Golf Classic. The sociology major owns a 3.63 GPA and was twice named the C-USA Female Golfer of the Week this season.

Rounding out the 2009 C-USA Women’s Golf All-Academic Team is UCF’s Katie Detlefsen. The sophomore is scheduled to graduate this summer after two years and will begin work on her master’s this upcoming fall as a junior. The double major in advertising and public relations holds a perfect 4.0 GPA, while boasting a stroke average of 79.07 on the year.

The C-USA Women’s Golf Championship is Sunday, April 12-Tuesday, April 14, 2009 in Tulsa, Okla. The University of Tulsa will host the Championship at the Tulsa Country Club where women’s programs from East Carolina, Marshall, Memphis, SMU, Southern Miss, Tulane, Tulsa, UAB, UCF, and UTEP will compete.
