SMU WTennis Defeats Aggy 4-1 in NCAA Tennis First Round

The No. 23 SMU Women's Tennis team (28-2) downed No. 39 Texas A&M, 4-1, today at the Baylor Tennis Center in the first round of the 2009 Women's NCAA Tennis Championship to extend their program-best winning streak to 18 matches. Junior Nicole Briceno won a thrilling second-set tiebreaker against Sheri Olivier to clinch the match at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3).

SMU now holds a 15-11 lead in the all-time series against A&M. With the win, the Mustangs advance to face either Baylor or UTA in Sunday's second round. The second round appearance will be the first for SMU since 2004.

Coming into the match, the Aggies had won the last five meetings and eight of the last nine. The Mustangs are now 1-1 in NCAA matches against A&M. The former Southwest Conference foes last met in the second round of the 2004 NCAA Championships, with the Aggies winning, 4-1.
