IRVING (C-USA/SMU) - The SMU Mustangs are headed to the Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championship in Tulsa, Okla., this weekend. The three-day event is slated for Thursday-Saturday, May 14-16, at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. SMU enters the Championships with USTFCCCA national ranking of No. 23.

The 2008 C-USA Cross Country champion, Silje Fjortoft of SMU will be defending her 3,000m steeplechase (10:33.72) and 5,000m (16:45.52) titles this weekend. Last season, the sophomore became the first C-USA distance runner to claim both titles in the same outdoor season. She carries in the NCAA third-best time of 9:56.73 in the steeplechase, and owns the 12th best time of 15:55.23 in the 5,000m. She is the only runner in the conference to break the 10- and 16-minute marks in each event.

Another Mustang is set to defend her conference title as senior Christina Mueller currently owns the league's third-best throw of 51.13m (167-09) in the discus. She won the 2008 crown with a toss of 54.26m (178-00). In order for Mueller to repeat as conference champion, she'll have to surpass teammate Simone Du Toit who tops the C-USA list with an impressive mark of 57.35m (188.02), a mark that ranks second in the nation.

All session championship tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for youth, while single session tickets are $12 and $6. C-USA students and staff with a valid I.D. are admitted free. Tickets are available by calling (918) 631-4688.
