Penalty Kick Pushes Brown Past Mustangs

Sept. 11, 2009

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - After a 90-minute rain and lighting delay, SMU men's soccer team (1-2-0) was defeated by the Brown Bears (1-0-1) 1-0 in the first game of the adidas-Brown classic. Brown's only goal came in the 33rd minute when Austin Mandel converted a penalty kick.

Even though the lightning had passed, both teams had to battle rain and a wet field throughout the night. SMU fired 12 shots at Brown's goal, but could not get any to go in. The Mustangs earned one more corner kick than the Bears (5-4), but could not come back from the penalty.

Midfielder Josue Soto made his first start at SMU, after transferring from Campbell prior to the season. Junior Goalkeeper Craig Hill made four saves, and has still not given up a goal during the course of play this season; both of his blemishes this season have been off of penalty kicks.

SMU finishes the adidas-Brown Classic on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. against Yale. SMU returns to Westcott Field on Friday, September 18 for the SMU Invitational, with a matchup with Bradley at 7:30 p.m.
