Volleyball Sweeps Memphis

DALLAS (SMU) - The Mustang volleyball team made short work of Memphis Saturday night, sweeping the Tigers (25-20, 25-17, 25-18) to finish the weekend 2-0 without dropping a set.

The Mustangs (15-7, 5-3 Conference USA) charged out of the gate to a 15-8 lead in the first set and never looked back. SMU kept Memphis (5-19, 1-8 C-USA) from changing the momentum, and went on to win the set 25-20. Dana Powell led the Mustangs to the five-point victory, hitting .875 in the set with seven kills. The sophomore outside hitter finished the match with her 14th double-double of the season with 15 kills and 11 digs.

Leading 9-7 in the second set, SMU broke the set open, scoring eight of the next nine points to take a 17-8 lead. The Tigers fought back, but the Mustangs held off the late charge to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match with the 25-17 win.

The Mustangs closed out the Tigers in the third, but not without a fight from the Tigers. SMU again took the early lead, going up 8-5 to start the set, but the Tigers battled back to cut the lead to one, 15-14. The Mustangs opened the lead to 19-14, and held the margin to win the set 25-18.

The Mustangs finished with 12 team blocks, led by freshman Courtney Manning, who finished with seven block assists. Kelli Becerra recorded 31 assists, and Sidney Stewart scored a match-high 17 digs.

The Mustangs return to action Friday when they host Rice at 7 p.m. SMU will show its support for breast cancer research by teaming with the Side-Out Foundation to host a Dig Pink event Saturday, Oct. 24 when the take on Houston at 7 p.m. in Moody Coliseum.

Great for them. Hope they win the conference championship. 4-0 at home, 1-3 on the road. Just get that road record looking a little better. Big homestand with Rice and Houston this week.
