SMU Loses 1-0 to UK

Postby smusoccer » Wed Nov 04, 2009 3:26 pm

We lost this afternoon, 1-0. I think this is the first time in Men's Soccer history that we didn't make the conference tournament (and the second year in a row not to make the NCAA tournament).

Great job coaches!

I don't know if we should have made conference tournament or not — with the tournament shrinking to four teams this year, I can understand that there are several teams (South Carolina, maybe Kentucky, maybe Tulsa even though we beat them, etc.) that are better. So maybe we didn't deserve to go. However, there's no way we should have been eliminated today, because Kentucky got a B.S. hall pass when we were supposed to play them last week. Word is there was a flu or something that hit a half a dozen players. WAAAH. They have a huge roster — play the reserves. The word I heard out of the C-USA office was that they didn't want that flu to hit the rest of their team, or ours. Here's a thought: LEAVE THE DISEASED AT HOME. Tell them not to come to the game. Quarantine them. Shoot them, if you have to. Our guys played (and beat) Memphis with a bunch of starters out with injuries, but we didn't cry to the C-USA office.

Kentucky might have been the better team today, and if so, good for the 'Cats. But this is one case when we got officially hosed by the league, which didn't have the stones to tell the Wildcats to play the hand they were dealt.

Perhaps if the team would have taken care of business in the rest of the season it would not have come down to this. One game does not a season make. The long and short of it is that we had as much talent as any team in the conference yet we failed to qualify. Compare this to prior years when we were usually selected to play in the NCAA championships and one can easily see how far this program has fallen. If changes are not made immediately then it will continue to fall. Ineffective coaching and an ineffective AD when it comes to non-rev sports.

GO PONIES!!!

What an albatross!!! Drop men's soccer and bring back track!!! The only reason for fielding men's soccer is because it is easier to be competitive in. With SH gone, and the disaster we have now, it is ridiculous to keep fielding a team that in its present state adds nothing to the university. SMU still has one of the best throwing coaches in the world and could easily restart men's track and be back in the top 10 nationally within a couple of years. Add June Jones speedsters and we could actually win a national championship in track!!!!

The conspiracy theorists around here, would probably say that's why Steve O has been plotting.

There is a reason why the Track & Field program was cut. Don't try and get rid of the soccer program because you are bitter about losing Track & Field.

Next time you want to express your anger about losing the Track & Field program go run a mile...

Given that he was talking about why T&F would be a better choice than soccer, this doesn't even make sense.

Our program currently sucks, which is pitiful after their history over the last decade. There is no doubt that something needs to be done differently.
