Waaaa, Waaaa. Our club sports are more interesting that almost all of our varsity sports. Can't compete with Equestrian though, MAN that is exciting stuff. Almost as much fun as...Rowing!

Mustangs Win Season Opener

Feb. 9, 2010

For Immediate Release

Lubbock, TX – The SMU Men’s Lacrosse team (1-0) broke away with 11 second-half goals as they opened the 2010 season against division rival Texas Tech (0-1). The Mustangs' 2009 regular season loss to the Red Raiders was still fresh in their minds as they took the field displaying both selfless balance on offense and renewed enthusiasm on defense in the 15 – 5 victory.

Offensively, SMU was led by senior attackman Tolar Hamblen (Episcopal Houston, TX) who tallied 4 goals and 4 assists while junior midfielder Brian Cozzolino (Dana Hills Club, CA) added 4 goals. Eight other Mustangs earned tallies in the scorer’s book.

On the defensive half of the field, the Mustangs brought intensity to the game that has been missing in prior season openers. Senior goalie David Perrin (The Westminster Schools, GA) recorded 9 saves in the first half of play while the defense as a whole scooped up an impressive 38 ground balls.

SMU received contributions from a number of first year players with a goal from freshman attackman Connor Tetrault (The Potomac School, DC) as well as key defensive plays from freshman defenseman Cam Banta (Woodberry Forrest, NJ) and freshman LSM John Potts (Strake Jesuit, TX).

With the game tied at 3 late in the second quarter, senior captain Tolar Hamblen scored the go-ahead goal on transition with seconds remaining in the half. The Mustangs broke the game open in the third quarter and found success on extra-man situations as Texas Tech was unfortunately penalized for fan conduct.

The Texas Tech Red Raider team was led by junior attackman Willie Sterner (Kingwood, TX) and sophomore attackman Neil Gordon (The Woodlands, TX) who scored two goals apiece.

The SMU Mustangs face division foe Oklahoma State University (0-0) this Saturday in Dallas.

What did the TT fans do to get a fan misconduct foul?

Directing F bombs towards SMU players.

I've seen SMU fans do worse several times.

Club or not, lacrosse and hockey are without a doubt the best spectator sports at SMU.

It's the hardest you're legally allowed to hit someone. Our game day atmospheres are much friendlier to the everyday fan then other sports. For instance, the BYOB policy, and the free entry policy are both fan favorites.

Uh ... perhaps you haven't heard of that team a guy named June Jones is putting together.
Had a pretty swell time in Hawaii watching them beat the snot out of Nevada.
Seriously — you should check them out sometime.

Congrats to the lacrosse team...as of today (2/16) the team is ranked 9th in the nation in the laxpower rankings for college club teams - just below Oregon and above Cal, Tennessee and oh Texas. The game against UT is Feb 19th in Austin. It should be the key to the season for the Mustangs for rankings in the Lone Star League...If you haven't seen a game, its worth the time. Next home game is OU on 2/26 at 7:30pm.

The home games are great. People bring their own beverages and it's a good time. I remember 2 years ago a drunk pledge ran onto the field and tackled a A&M defender right before a face-off. Classic
