No. 22 W-Tennis Drops 4-3 Heartbreaker to No. 33 Texas
Mustangs travel to face No. 47 Texas A&M on Tuesday

AUSTIN, Texas (SMU) - The 22nd-ranked SMU Women's Tennis (12-2) team fell to No. 33 Texas, 4-3, in a heartbreaker at at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center. SMU is now 12-2 as the loss snaps an eight-match winning streak. The Longhorns (4-3) needed a rally to claim the doubles point for the early lead and then grabbed three singles matches needed for the win.

The Mustangs claimed the first doubles decision when sophomores Marta Lesniak and Aleksandra Malyarchikova routed Krista Damico and Amanda Craddock, 8-2. Texas' No. 2 doubles tandem was able to gain an early break point and went on to down Pavi Francis and Edyta Cieplucha, 8-4, to make things come down to the third doubles line.

At No. 3 doubles, freshman Shahzoda Hatamova and senior Casey Kennedy raced out to a 4-0 lead, but were unable to hold on and eventually fell, 8-6, to put SMU in the early 1-0 hole.

SMU's singles wins came at spots Nos. 1, 2 and 5. Francis claimed the Mustangs' first point with her 6-3, 7-6 (5) straight set defeat of Sarah Lancaster at No. 5. With the win, Francis improved to 8-3 in dual match singles play this spring. Moments later, No. 59 Lesniak took out No. 26 Aeriel Ellis, 6-0, 3-6, 6-4 at the top spot and is now a perfect 12-0 this spring at the No. 1 line. Lesniak is also 5-1 against nationally ranked opponents.

Malyarchikova dispatched of No. 50 Vania Corovia at No. 2, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 for SMU's third point. Malyarchikova is also 12-0 this spring with 10 of those wins coming from the No. 2 position. The sophomore's win was also her second this spring against a ranked foe.

The Mustangs are back in action this Tuesday at they travel to College Station to take on No. 47 Texas A&M.
