Men's Soccer Continues To Earn Season Awards

Dec. 6, 2010

DALLAS (SMU) - SMU men's soccer players Arthur Ivo, Juan Castillo, Robbie Derschang and Zach Barnes have been named to Goal.com end of season teams. The Mustangs made it to the NCAA quarterfinals this season, tallying a 16-2-2 record on the season.

Ivo was named to the Goal.com Second Team after leading the Mustangs with 25 points in 20 games. The Hermann Trophy semifinalist tied for the team lead in goals (10) and recorded two game-winners. Ivo's biggest goal of the season kept SMU's season alive as he scored the game-tying goal with 15 seconds remaining in regulation against No. 17 Creighton in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Following two scoreless overtime periods, Ivo then converted the Mustangs' fifth shootout attempt to advance SMU 5-3 on penalty kicks. Ivo was also named the Conference USA Co-MVP and Co-Offensive Player of the Year.

Castillo received Goal.com Freshman First Team accolades after collecting 24 points in his first collegiate season. Castillo tied Ivo with 10 goals on the year and recorded 4 game-winning goals. The forward started the Mustangs' comeback in the NCAA Second Round against No. 17 Creighton, when he tied the game at one on a header in the 79th minute. Castillo had a six-game goal-scoring streak Sept. 6 - 24, including three straight game-winners. In addition to this honor, Castillo was named the Conference USA Freshman of the Year, made the C-USA Second Team and was named to the All-Freshman team.

Derschang and Barnes were both named to the Goal.com Freshman Second team after standout seasons. Derschang collected five goals, including two game-winners, and 15 points on the year. Derschang recorded an assist in the NCAA quarterfinals after he broke down the left side and fed a ball down the center of the field to Ivo, who ran on behind the defense and fired the ball from 14 yards out. The midfielder's biggest goal of the season was his game-winner against then-No. 17 Tulsa. Derschang was also named to the C-USA All-Freshman Team.

Barnes netted five goals on the year for 10 points for the Mustangs. The midfielder scored two game-winning goals this season, including an overtime game-clincher against Marshall. Barnes scored his first goal in his first career start on a 30-yard header in the season opener against Missouri State. Like Castillo and Derschang, Barnes was a C-USA All-Freshman Team selection.
