Four Named To NSCAA All-Midwest Region Teams

Dec. 8, 2010

DALLAS (SMU) - SMU men's soccer players Arthur Ivo, Juan Castillo, Leone Cruz and Josue Soto have been named to 2010 NSCAA All-Midwest Region teams. The Mustangs advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals this season, tallying a 16-2-2 record on the year.

Ivo and Castillo were named to the 2010 NSCAA All-Midwest Region First Team.

Ivo led the Mustangs with 25 points in 20 games. The Hermann Trophy semifinalist tied for the team lead in goals (10) and recorded two game-winners. Ivo's biggest goal of the season kept SMU's season alive as he scored the game-tying goal with 15 seconds remaining in regulation against No. 17 Creighton in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Following two scoreless overtime periods, Ivo then converted the Mustangs' fifth shootout attempt to advance SMU 5-3 on penalty kicks. Ivo was also named the Conference USA Co-MVP and Co-Offensive Player of the Year, and received numerous weekly awards including the NSCAA's National Player of the Week Oct. 18-24.

Castillo collected 24 points in his first collegiate season. The freshman tied Ivo with 10 goals on the year and recorded four game-winning goals. Castillo started the Mustangs' comeback in the NCAA Second Round against No. 17 Creighton, when he tied the game at one on a header in the 79th minute. Castillo had a six-game goal-scoring streak Sept. 6 - 24, including three straight game-winners, and was named the NSCAA's National Player of the Week of Sept. 13-19 for his efforts. In addition to this honor, Castillo was named the Conference USA Freshman of the Year, made the C-USA Second Team and was named to the C-USA All-Freshman team.

Seniors Cruz and Soto were selected to the NSCAA All-Midwest Region Second Team.

Cruz was solid on the back line for SMU this season, while also contributing offensively. He helped the SMU defense to allow just 22 goals against in 20 games, five shutouts and a 1.05 goals against average. Cruz tallied and goal and an assist Memphis, and collected five points on the season. Each of his three assists came on a game-winning goal, including one in overtime against Jacksonville. Last month, Cruz was named to the Conference USA Second Team.

Soto led the Mustangs in assists (7), and was third in goals (7) and points (21) this season. The senior sent SMU to the NCAA Quarterfinals after scoring the game's lone goal in the Mustangs' win over No. 12 William & Mary in the Round of 16. Soto tallied a total four game-winners on the year, including a penalty kick against then-No. 20 South Carolina. The midfielder had a five-game point-scoring streak (3 goals, 3 assists) Sept. 19-Oct. 6. Like Cruz, Soto was also named to the C-USA Second Team.
