Men's Tennis Downs Columbia, Wins Sixth Straight

March 16, 2011

DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU men's tennis team defeated two-time defending Ivy league champs Columbia 6-1 on Thursday afternoon at Turpin Tennis Center. With the win, the Mustangs have won six consecutive dual matches and are now 9-5 on the season.

SMU started the afternoon with a sweep of doubles action. Artem Baradach and Gaston Cuadranti defeated the pairing of Kevin Kung and Nathaniel Gery 8-6 in the No. 1 spot. Joseph Hattrup and Tobias Flood downed the duo of Cyril Bucher and Tizian Bucher 8-6, while Robert Sajovich and Adham el-Effendi combined to beat Haig Schneiderman and Rajeev Deb-Sen 9-8 (10-8).

In singles play, No. 38 Baradach edged out Schneiderman 5-7, 6-0, 11-9 in the No. 1 position. Baradach is now 8-2 on the year and 7-2 in the top spot.

The Mustangs received dominating performances from several players including David Costa, who defeated Cyril Bucher 6-3, 6-1. Cuadranti downed Kung 6-2, 6-3, while Mischa Nowicki beat Tizian Bucher 6-2, 6-2. el-Effendi edged out Gery 5-7, 6-3, 10-8 to earn another point for the Ponies. SMU's lone loss came as Sajovich fell to Deb-Sen 5-7, 6-1, 10-8.

SMU hosts Bradley at 10 a.m. and Prairie View at 1 p.m. Thursday at Turpin Tennis Center.
