Women's Swimming Takes 36th At NCAAs

Therese Svendsen an All-American in the 100-yard backstroke

AUSTIN (SMU) - SMU women's swimmer Therese Svendsen earned All-American status as she placed ninth in the 100-yard backstroke at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships this weekend. Svendsen touched the wall in 52.35, an SMU school record. The junior earned nine points for the Mustangs, who tied for 36th at this year's championships.

Svendsen had another top-20 finish in the 200-yard backstroke as she placed 19th in a time of 1:55.01.

Freshmen Nina Rangelova> and Genny Konicke also competed for SMU.

Rangelova placed 27th in the 200-yard freestyle (1:46.43), 53rd in the 100-yard freestyle with a personal best time of 50.01 and the 54th in 500-yard freestyle (4:48.59).

Konicke finished 44th in the 100-yard butterfly, clocking in with a time of 54.03.

Wow, how far have we fallen! Where are the days of the Top Ten? What's up with our recruiting? Anyone?

Don't get me started. This would need more than its own thread. As referenced in another comment, the facilities are terrible. Worse than most High Schools, any hope for improvement is not near term. This issue is true for the Men's Team, as well.

My worst fear is that Swimming & Diving will erode further and the green eye shaded AD types will target the two programs for further reductions. :(

This is one of those conundrums that needs to be looked at carefully. Clearly, the facilities are not the best. I think the problem is not the coaches.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna
