Women's Soccer draws with Texas in Spring game

Postby DanFreibergerForHeisman » Sat Apr 02, 2011 3:24 pm

SMU and Texas played to a 1-1 draw today at Westcott.

Mallory Baum scored a fantastic goal from about 20 yards out off a nice pass from Kenzie Scovill.

Unfortunately, Texas equalized late from a corner.

Baum's strike came about midway through the second half and is SMU's first Spring goal.

Notes of interest - Courtney Webb played the first half, Lauryn Bodden played the second half. SMU played with 11 today unlike Saturday against Baylor.

SMU controlled the play for much of the game - we had 4-5 fantastic scoring chances in the first half but could not convert any of them.

Standout players in my opinion were Courtney Webb, Kaitlyn Eidson, Mallory Baum, Courtney Smith, and Kenzie Scovill.

Nice effort from the Ponies holding their own against a Texas team which made the NCAAs last season. It is awesome to see us playing very well against a good Big 12 team.

Next up for the Mustangs is Oklahoma State in Stillwater next Saturday.

SMU closes the Spring schedule at Wescott on April 20 vs. Oklahoma.

SMU's goal was a great shot, but the game was won (and SMU was the better team today, by far), in the defense and midfield. UT really didn't get many offensive chances at all. Kaitlyn Eidson and Catherine Cox did a masterful job patrolling the middle of the defense.

I agree with SMUFan that the Ponies were the superior team. Much of the first half was spent in front of the UT goal, which could have been due in part to the fact that the Ponies were playing with a strong wind at their backs. But when SMU had the upper hand in the second half, too, going in to the wind and with just one substitute, that was encouraging.

They didn't keep stats for the game, but it would be interesting to see what the shot totals were. I'd bet SMU outshot UT by more than a 2-1 margin.

FYI the game against Oklahoma State Saturday (4/9) is at noon. Hopefully the OSU web site will have a score and some information since Erwin has apparently taken this Spring into stealth mode...
