Two goals for Redman at US Youth National Championships

Postby DanFreibergerForHeisman » Fri Jul 29, 2011 10:01 am

As reported on the athletics website, Mallory Baum, Courtney Smith, Katie Bass, Shelby Redman, and Jessica Bartol are participating in the Girls' U19 finals at the US Youth Soccer National Championships in Phoenix this week with the Dallas Texans 92 Red team.

They lost their first game to Woodbury Inferno 1-0 Wednesday night, but bounced back with a 3-1 win over PDA Tsunami Thursday behind two first half goals from Shelby Redman.

There aren't detailed box scores to tell who is actually playing and how many minutes. Redman is the leading scorer through two games.

There are about 30 seconds of highlights from the first match on the US Youth Soccer youtube channel - you can see Smith, Bass, Redman, and Bartol.

If they put up decent highlights from the second match (hopefully with Redman's goals) I will post a link.

Game 3 tonight vs. Real Colorado is a must-win if they hope to make the finals:

(CO) (RIV-C) Real Colorado National 91/92 (2-0-0, 6 Pts., 3 GF, 0 GA)
(MN) (RII-C) Woodbury Inferno (1-1-0, 6 Pts., 1 GF, 2 GA)
(TX-N) (RIII-C) Dallas Texans 92 Red Dallas (1-1-0, 3 Pts., 3 GF, 2 GA)
(NJ) (RI-C) PDA Tsunami (0-2-0, 0 Pts., 1 GF, 4 GA)

They put up a photo album from the first game on the US Youth National Championships facebook page and there is a shot of Baum playing as well.

It's great to see all five of the SMU players healthy and participating, considering Redman, Bartol, and Bass all missed various amounts of the spring with injuries.

The Texans won 1-0 last night to finish first in the group and will play Real Colorado in the championship game Sunday morning.

Still nothing from the Thursday night game, but they have about 30 seconds of highlights from the Friday night game. In the limited footage, you can see Smith, Redman, and Bass.

Here is the link to the Friday night highlights - which contains the best SMU footage available from the three group matches.

You can see Shelby Redman (13) totally nutmeg a girl and make a nice run down the left at 0:47, and a couple of nice Courtney Smith (5) free kicks - including a fantastic long one right to the head of a teammate on the far post at 1:15.

Looking forward to seeing a lot of this at Wescott this fall!

Wow - make that three goals for Redman at the US Youth National Championships!

The Dallas Texans 92 Red team won the national U19 championship today 2-1 AET.

Courtney Smith scored for the Texans in the 13th minute, but they surrendered the equaliser in the 75th minute.

Redman scored the huge goal in the 111th minute to seal the championship for the Texans.

Congratulations to Mallory Baum, Courtney Smith, Katie Bass, Shelby Redman, and Jessica Bartol - and let's bring some of this winning momentum to Westcott this fall...

Hopefully they will have some good highlights of this one available soon.

That's great news for the SMU team, and for women's soccer in Dallas, which in turn also benefits SMU.

Highlights - the pertinent portion for SMU fans starts at 8:18.

The Courtney Smith (5) goal was a sweet hard low shot from a free kick into the lower left corner. It looks like it was around 20-25 yards out.

The Shelby Redman (13) goal in extra time was on a penalty, and she is the one who drew the foul as well.

That first nice free kick at 8:44 is also from Mallory Baum (17).

Katie Bass (3) and Jessica Bartol (6) are also in the clip as well.

From SMUMustangs.com:

Mustang Players Bring USYSA National Championship Back To Dallas
SMU quintet earns U-19 championship 2-1 in overtime over Real Colorado

Aug. 1, 2011

DALLAS (SMU) – Yesterday, SMU soccer players Jessica Bartol, Katie Bass, Mallory Baum, Shelby Redman and Courtney Smith helped lead the Dallas Texans Red ’92 to its second U.S. Youth Soccer Association National Championship in a 2-1 overtime thriller against Real Colorado National 91/92 in Phoenix, Ariz. Bass, Baum, Redman and Smith were all a part of the team’s championship run as U-16s in 2008.

Unlike 2008, in which the Texans didn’t lose a game, as U-19s the team had to battle back to reach the finals after dropping their first game of the tournament 1-0 to Woodbury Inferno of Minnesota. Redman led the way in the team’s second game, a 3-1 win over PDA Tsunami of New Jersey, in which the striker connected with two goals in a six minute span late in the first half. In what could have been a must-win game, the Texans knocked-off group leader Real Colorado in the final game of the group play, 1-0.

Facing Colorado for the second time in the tournament, the Texans took a one-goal lead in the final when Smith tallied her first goal of the tournament in the 13th minute. With the game winding down, Laura Feehs tied up the game in the 75th minute for Colorado, eventually sending the game to overtime. With less than 10 minutes remaining, Redman was taken down in the box, drawing a penalty kick. She blasted it past Colorado’s keeper to lift Dallas to the championship. With her third goal in four games, Redman finished tied for the most goals in the U-19 Girls tournament.

The first opportunity for fans to see the five will be at the Mustangs’ exhibition game against 2010 Sweet-16 qualifier Oklahoma State at Westcott Field on Aug. 13 at 7 p.m.

Set your DVRs! Fox Soccer will have a 30 minute highlight show of the US Youth National Championships on August 11 - which should have some good SMU-related footage.

http://championships.usyouthsoccer.org/news/Story.asp?story_id=6181

On Thursday, August 11 at 8 p.m. ET, the US Youth Soccer National Championships Highlight Show will premiere on the Fox Soccer Channel, US Youth Soccer's official television partner. The show will highlight the national championships providing game footage from all 12 championship matches, as well as feature stories, interviews and more.

All-Tournament teams will be announced by US Youth Soccer this week - hopefully there will be some good SMU representation.

Of course, it's also time to move on from the club success and concentrate on the SMU team success which started with the first practices last week and really takes off with the exhibition against Oklahoma State Saturday at Westcott (hopefully in front of a nice crowd)!!!

Shelby Redman was named to the all-tournament XI for the U19 Girls. I would have thought Courtney Smith would have made it as well - especially with her goal in the finals.

It looks kind of formulaic, with 4 from the champion, 3 from the runner-up, and 2 each from the other teams.

Anyway, congratulations to Redman - and hopefully the goal scoring will continue into this season for the Mustangs (not forgetting her spring goal in what - 20 minutes of total action?)

Don't forget the highlights show on Fox Soccer this Thursday and the exhibition at Westcott Saturday night!
