Men's Soccer beats Houston Baptist 4-0 in exhibition

Postby DanFreibergerForHeisman » Wed Aug 17, 2011 11:41 pm

It took a little while to get going, but the men easily handled HBU tonight at Wescott.

Jaime Ibarra and Devin Cook each played a half in goal - and both looked pretty good.

Emmet Kumeh and Chance Bergen stood out among the freshmen.

Ivo, Barnes, Castillo, Derschang - of course looked good.

The defense was also very solid - especially Diogo de Almeida.

Sorry - don't remember the goal scorers. I'm sure there will be details to follow. Definitely a nice start for the Mustangs though.

Here is the release. Barnes, Castillo, Rosales, and Aranda had the goals. Castillos's was beautiful.

DALLAS (SMU) - The No. 5 SMU men's soccer team defeated Houston Baptist, 4-0, in an exhibition match Wednesday night at Westcott field.

Sophomore midfielder Zach Barnes opened the scoring in the 26th minute when he and fellow sophomore Juan Castillo executed a perfect give-and-go at the top of the box before Barnes finished off a shot from eight yards out.

Castillo netted a goal of his own in the 43rd minute for a 2-0 Mustang lead when he fired a shot from 28 yard out that hit off the left post and in.

Redshirt freshman Damian Rosales added to the Mustang lead with a shot from 10 yards out in the 64th minute. Freshman Emmet Kumeh sent a ball in to the box to Rosales, who collected the ball, turned around and sent the ball in just inside the left post.

Freshman Edu Aranda closed out the scoring with a goal in the 83rd minute. Sophomore Chris Sendejas made a run down the right side and crossed the ball to Tyler Engel. Engel turned and fed a pass to Aranda, who tapped it home.

Sophomore Jaime Ibarra and freshman Devin Cook split time in goal, with each making two saves for the combined shutout.

SMU hosts conference rival Memphis in another exhibition game at noon Sunday at Westcott Field. Admission to Sunday's game is free. The Mustangs open the regular season against No. 13 William & Mary on Aug. 27 at Westcott Field at 7 p.m.

We could have beaten HBU by twice that score. They were completely out of their league against the Ponies.

Good to see the sophomores picking up where they left off last year.

Making a big jump this year: Chris Sendejas (call it a hunch).
