Men's Soccer - SMU Classic

Postby DanFreibergerForHeisman » Thu Sep 15, 2011 7:19 pm

Two more big games for the Mustangs this weekend, and we are finally back home at Westcott.

SMU Classic Presented by Jason's Deli
Westcott Field - Dallas, Texas
Dartmouth Big Green (1-1-2) at SMU Mustangs (2-3)
Sept. 16 - 7:30 p.m. CT
Washington Huskies (2-0-2) at SMU Mustangs (2-3)
Sept. 18 - 7 p.m. CT

Dartmouth is getting some regional attention in the Northeast, and Washington is currently ranked ninth in the Far West region and getting votes in the national poll. They should both be great games!

There's even a nice video on the SMU website previewing the weekend. Cool!

Sorry the weather chased you away - you missed a fantastic game!

SMU wins 2-1 in the first OT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Robbie Derschang scored early for SMU on a beautiful goal from around 18 yards on a nice feed from Arthur Ivo.

Dartmouth equalised around the 20th minute or so from a set piece.

SMU won early in the first OT on a fantastic goal from Juan Castillo off a free kick started by Adam Still.

Both teams had some great chances, although SMU had many more chances to win this one in regulation. It will be interesting to see the stats on this one.

SMU had incredible control of possession. Dartmouth only really threatened on set pieces and counter attacks.

So cool to see such a great enthusiastic crowd on a poor weather night! The entire game was played in a downpour. Maybe the weather contributed to the rowdiness but it was really cool no matter the reason...

Thankfully the officials didn't see the lightning near the end of regulation of the SMU game so they let us play the OT right away. :)

GO PONIES!

After looking at the stat sheet, SMU did have a decent statistical advantage in this one.

SMU had a slight advantage in total shots 18-14, but had a big 12-6 advantage in shots on goal. Corners were even 4-4.

A quick count of the fouls also shows Dartmouth had 19 fouls while SMU only had 8 which I think is an accurate reflection on the amount of good possession SMU had for most of the night. Dartmouth also collected three yellows and SMU didn't see any cards.

Interesting SMU only used 72 total substitute minutes.

Best part of the stat sheet though: "Weather: rainy, rainy, rainy" :)

Just got home. They said it doesn't count and will not be rescheduled.

Too bad - it would have been a fantastic match.

The team is off to LA next weekend. Hopefully the weather will be kind to them out there. :)
