DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU men's soccer team defeated Dartmouth 2-1 in overtime during day one action of the SMU Classic Presented by Jason's Deli Friday night at Westcott Field. Sophomores Robbie Derschang and Juan Castillo scored for the Mustangs. SMU improves to 3-3 on the season, while Dartmouth is now 1-2-2.

SMU opened the scoring early as Derschang tallied his first goal of the year in the third minute. Senior Arthur Ivo sent a cross to the top left corner of the box for Derschang who sent the ball just inside the far post. The helper was Ivo's team-leading sixth point of the year.

Dartmouth scored the equalizer in the 23rd minute when Aaron Gaide scored from 16 yards out. Sophomore keeper Jaime Ibarra made the initial save on Kevin Dzierzawski but was unable to make the stop on Gaide.

After a scoreless second half, Castillo netted the overtime game-winner in the 93rd minute. Following a Dartmouth foul, senior captain Adam Still took a free kick from midfield sending the ball in to the box to freshman Aaron Simmons who headed it on to Castillo. Castillo took a fired the ball home from eight yards out.

Ibarra turned in another solid performance in goal tonight, making several diving saves en route to his third victory of the season.

I thought I was a little late for the SMU game when I got there, but the field was empty. Turns out the first game was in a rain/lightning delay. When they came back out, Washington knocked off Tulsa.

The fact that the games were played, and played pretty well, was pretty remarkable. Honestly, neither team that lost should be too upset. Watching the ball slide all over the soaked field looked like ... take a bowling ball and fling it across a hockey rink. Then try to control it with your feet. Considering the conditions, all four teams played exceptionally well. The goalkeepers, in particular, were remarkable. With the way the ball was skidding all over the place, it would have been understandable if they had let in a lot of goals, but they didn't.

SMU's keeper was terrific. It was hard to tell much (visibility for us wasn't great, either) on the goal he let in, whether it was a "soft" goal or unstoppable because there was such a cluster in front of the net. But he made a lot of good saves, and appears to be getting more confident each week.

Derschang's goal was sweet: took a crossing pass just outside the 18, shook a defender with a quick fake and fired a shot inside the far post. Goalie had no chance.

Castillo's game-winner was a perfect goal for the weather conditions. When overtime started, I began thinking that maybe it wasn't our night. But in conditions like that, coaches always talk about repeatedly cracking shots at the net. Castillo's shot was low and powerful, and hit who knows how many people on the way in.

Dartmouth is better than its record (as is SMU). That was a terrific win.

Beat Washington!
I really shouldn't drink and type.
