Women's Soccer - SMU vs. Prairie View

Postby DanFreibergerForHeisman » Sat Sep 17, 2011 10:13 am

SMU Mustangs (3-4-0) vs. Prairie View A&M (0-8-0)
September 18 – 2:30 p.m. CT
Westcott Field – Dallas, Texas

Prairie View comes in 0-8-0 after their loss to UTSA last night. The Panthers have been outscored 31-1 in their 8 matches.

Hopefully the Mustangs can use this match to get the offense going since conference play starts next Friday with UCF coming to Westcott.

31-1 all season?
Yes, that sounds like a recipe for offensive repair.

Goals by Clarke, own goal, Elliott, and Scovill.

Shot statistics were ridiculous - will see when the official score sheet comes out.

It was only 1-0 at the half though, which was somewhat unsettling.

They have the second goal credited to Elliott - so the goals are Clarke, Elliott, Elliott, and Scovill.

Shots were 35-1 (not a typo) and shots on goal were 15-0. Corners were 15-0.

The only other item of interest is Lauryn Bodden started in goal and played 81 minutes. Meg Stewart got the final 9 minutes. Nice to get the keepers some experience for next season - although they obviously didn't have that much to do. Bodden did have one instance where she had to come off her line and read it perfectly.

One other thing - Shelby Redman was not dressed. Hopefully she will be ready for UCF Friday.

From SMUMustangs.com:

Women's Soccer Cruises Past Prairie View A&M
Elliot nets first two goals of the season

Sept. 18, 2011

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU women’s soccer team defeated Prairie View A&M 4-0 Sunday afternoon at Westcott Field. The Mustangs move to 4-4-0 heading into conference season next weekend, while the Panthers drop to 0-8-0 on the season.

Freshman Rikki Clarke started the scoring off for the Mustangs in the eight minute. After a shot by Kenzie Scovill deflected off a defender, Clarke pounced on the rebound and buried it in the back of the net to give SMU the early advantage.

SMU added to its lead in the second half as Olivia Elliot scored the first two goals of her SMU career within a six minute span. The forward scored her first goal in the 63rd minute after Kaitlyn Eidson slotted a through ball to the right side of the goal to Katherine Cox who found an open Elliot on the back post.

Less than six minutes later, Elliot got free at the top of the 18-yard box and ripped a shot under the crossbar to extend the lead to 3-0.

SMU scored its final goal of the match in the 82nd minute as Briana Gaines fired a shot that the Panthers goalkeeper couldn’t corral. Scovill calmly slotted the rebound into the net for her second goal of the season.

From start to finish, the Mustangs controlled both possession and the game, outshooting the Panthers 35-1, with a 15-0 advantage in both shots on goal and in corner kicks.

SMU will look to take this momentum into Friday’s Conference USA opener as the squad hosts defending regular-season champion UCF. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Westcott Field.

Season tickets for SMU women’s soccer are $24. Individual game tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under. Blocks of 50 or more tickets are $1 apiece. Tickets can be purchased online at SMUMustangs.com or by calling 214-SMU-GAME (214-768-4263).

Interesting choice of headlines. Did anyone see anything that suggested SMU cruised?

I'm glad we won, and that we pitched a shutout. But being up 1-0 on that team is disgraceful, and frankly, the final margin should have been more than 4 goals.

Hopefully they can crank it up a notch next week.
