Women's Soccer - SMU vs. Southern Miss

Postby DanFreibergerForHeisman » Sat Sep 24, 2011 7:35 pm

SMU, fresh off their huge victory over UCF Friday night, returns to action Sunday afternoon at Westcott against Southern Miss.

Southern Miss come in with a 3-4-3 record. They played a very weak non-conference schedule - with their only wins so far against Jacksonville State, Southeastern Louisiana, and Arkansas-Pine Bluff. They did manage a nice 0-0 draw at Tulsa Friday night to start their CUSA season.

SMU needs to make sure to regain their focus for this one after the high of Friday night.

Beating UCF was great, but we need to beat teams like Southern Miss, too.

SMU gets a solid 3-1 win over Southern Miss today. Goals from Mallory Baum, Kenzie Scovill, and Kaitlyn Eidson.

Baum scored early (around the 4th minute). SMU was in total control of the entire first half. Scovill added the goal later in the first and SMU took the 2-0 lead to the half.

Southern Miss scored off a free kick around the 70th minute or so.

Eidson restored the two goal advantage with a header off a corner from Baum.

Overall a nice game from the Mustangs. SMU really wasn't threatened that much, but any time Southern Miss mounted any pressure the SMU defense took care of it with little problem. A couple of fouls late gave Southern Miss some opportunities on free kicks - and they were able to convert one of them.

Rikki Clarke returned and started and played most of the game until she left with another injury. The injury today didn't look nearly as bad as the one Friday so hopefully she will be ok for next weekend.

The SMU release is out (including Erwin's postgame interview):

SMU outshot Southern Miss 15-3 (10-3 on net). SMU also had a 6-1 advantage on corners.

The stats sound about right considering SMU was in total control for most of the afternoon.

Great effort from the whole team. 2-0-0 in CUSA after the first weekend is awesome. Rice and Houston come to Westcott next weekend!

From SMUMustangs.com:

Women's Soccer Bolts Past Southern Miss, 3-1
Three Mustangs find the back of the net

Sept. 25, 2011

DALLAS (SMU) - Following a big win Friday night over No. 19 UCF, the SMU women's soccer team produced a convincing 3-1 victory over Southern Miss this afternoon at Westcott Field. The win keeps the Mustangs atop Conference USA after the first weekend of play.

The Ponies were quick out the gates today with junior Mallory Baum putting SMU on the board just four minutes into the game. The midfielder found open space on the left side from 10-yards out and ripped a shot just inside the near post. The tally was Baum's team-leading third goal of the season.

Not to be outdone, Kenzie Scovill scored her third goal of the year, doubling the Mustangs lead in the 35th minute. The junior followed up an initial strike that was blocked by Golden Eagle goalkeeper Hannah Vanderboegh and put the rebound in.

Southern Miss (3-5-3, 0-1-1) cut the Mustang's lead in half in the 81st minute when a Danielle Beatty cross on a free kick found Elisha Tarbell on the back post.

Five minutes later, Kaitlyn Eidson put the game out of reach in the 86th minute, netting her second goal of the weekend. Baum sent a perfect cross into the box on a corner kick that found Eidson just inside the six-yard box to head the ball into the back of the net.

SMU (6-4-0, 2-0-0) held a 15-3 shot advantage over Southern Miss, tallying seven more strikes on target than the opposition. The Mustangs also had a telling 6-1 advantage in corner in kicks.

The Mustangs will be back in action on Sept. 30 as the team hosts in-state rival Rice (6-3-1, 1-1-0). Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Westcott Field.

Season tickets are $24. Individual game tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under. Blocks of 50 or more tickets are $1 apiece. Tickets can be purchased online at SMUMustangs.com or by calling 214-SMU-GAME (214-768-4263).
