DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
KAITLYN EIDSON, SMU
Senior, D, Katy, Texas
Eidson played a key role in SMU's 2-0-0 start in Conference USA play. On Friday, she scored the game-winner against No. 19 UCF, the C-USA preseason favorite and defending regular-season champion, with a header in the 63rd minute. On top of that, she was crucial in anchoring a backline that shutout a potent UCF attack, which outshot SMU 13-5. The 1-0 win ended the Knights' six-match unbeaten streak. The win was also SMU's first win over a ranked opponent since Nov. 15, 2002, when the team knocked off No. 11 Texas 2-1 in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Eidson continued her solid played in central defense, as SMU held Southern Miss scoreless through just over 80 minutes on Sunday. After giving up a goal in the 81st minute, Eidson put the game out of reach with her second headed goal of the weekend in the 86th minute. The Mustang backline held USM to only three shots on the day. This is Eidson's first C-USA Defensive Player of the Week honor, but second weekly honor of her career as she was named Offensive Player of the Week in 2010.

SMUMustangs.com's version:

Eidson Named C-USA Defensive Player Of The Week Honor
Senior earns second-career conference POTW selection

Sept. 26, 2011

DALLAS (SMU) - SMU senior central defender Kaitlyn Eidson earned Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week for her performances this past weekend. The Mustangs shutout No. 19 UCF 1-0 on Friday night, and followed that up by defeating Southern Miss 3-1 on Sunday.

Eidson played a key role in SMU's 2-0-0 start in Conference USA play. On Friday, she scored the game-winner against No. 19 UCF, the C-USA preseason favorite and defending regular-season champion, by redirecting a shot off of a free kick in the 63rd minute. After giving up a goal in the 81st minute, Eidson put the game out of reach with a header goal off of a corner kick in the 86th minute. The Mustang backline held USM to only three shots on the day. This is Eidson's first C-USA Defensive Player of the Week honor, but second weekly honor of her career as she was named Offensive Player of the Week in 2010.

The Mustangs will be back in action on Sept. 30 as the team hosts in-state rival Rice (6-3-1, 1-1-0). Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Westcott Field.

Season tickets are $24. Individual game tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under. Blocks of 50 or more tickets are $1 apiece. Tickets can be purchased online at SMUMustangs.com or by calling 214-SMU-GAME (214-768-4263).

Eidson also named to the CollegeSoccer360 primetime performers list for week 6 - quite a nice honor:

http://www.collegesoccer360.com/awards_2011_F/

Selection for the CS360 weekly awards is based on any/all of the following "primetime" criteria (i.e. not solely based on raw stats):

- Must have been playing in a game involving a top-50 team from the CS360 Composite National Rankings (or in a game involving a preseason conference favorite/leader), or performed at a high level in a game that is key to the team's postseason qualification/participation.

- In general, preference is given based on the quality of the opponent and situational factors involved in the player's accomplishments.

- Exhibited strong leadership and/or involved in clutch performances, such as gamewinning goals, noteworthy comebacks, late scores, momentum-shifting play, all-around performance, team spirit, etc.

- Overcame adversity or extreme circumstances (for the team and/or individual).

- Bonus consideration is given for key performances away from team's home field.

KAITLYN EIDSON
SMU ... Defender ... Sr.
Katy, Texas ... #17

Versatile central defender and team co-captain who guided Mustangs to program's first win over a nationally-ranked opponent since 2002 (1-0 vs. Central Florida, cs360 #25) ... sent home low linedrive free-kick from fellow defender Courtney Smith (63') for eventual gamewinner vs. the Conference USA favorites/defending champs (SMU was slotted 6th in the CUSA preseason poll) ... helped shut out potent UCF offense while limiting Knights to 13 total shots (only five on-goal) and five corner kicks ... returned two days later as anchor of defense that held Southern Mississippi scoreless for 80 minutes – before heading in a Mallory Baum corner-kick service to secure 3-1 final (86') ... member of back line that yielded only three Southern Miss shots and a single corner kick ... fourth-year starter (5A in '08, 5G in '10) and a CUSA second-team performer in both 2009 and '10 ... product of Cinco Ranch High School and the Eclipse Soccer Club ( based in Sugarland, Texas).
