Owls net game-winner in 84th minute

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU women’s soccer team dropped a 1-0 heartbreaker to Rice tonight at Westcott Field. The Mustangs drop to 6-5-0 overall, 2-1-0 in Conference USA, while Rice moves to 7-3-1 and 2-1-0 in conference.

In a deadlocked match for 80-plus minutes, Rice’s Gabriela Iribarne and Quynh-Nuh Truong got on a 2-on-1 break deep in SMU’s half. Irabarne played a short pass to Truong on the left side, who then slotted ball past SMU goalkeeper Courtney Webb for the eventual game-winner.

The Mustangs held an 11-9 advantage in shots over the Owls, but were unable to find the back of the net, despite several great opportunities early in the game. SMU also held a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.

The Mustangs will be back in action on Sunday as the team hosts Houston (4-7-0, 1-2-0). Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. at Westcott Field.
