Nov. 22, 2011

IRVING, Texas (SMU) - SMU swimmer Therese Svendsen has been named the Conference USA Swimmer of the Week after automatically qualifying for the NCAA Championships in the 100-yard backstroke and posting NCAA B standards in five events at the Cougar Classic this past weekend.

Svendsen automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships, to be held in March after, by winning the 100-yard backstroke in an NCAA A-qualifying time of 52.23 on day two of the Cougar Classic. The senior also earned top honors in the 200-yard backstroke (1:54.52) and the 200-yard individual medley (1:59.51); both times were NCAA B standards. All three marks were the fastest time by a Conference USA swimmer this season.

Svendsen led off the 200- and 400-yard medley relays as the Mustangs took first in the events, touching the wall in 1:39.58 and 3:37.15, respectively. She also swam the second leg of the 800-yard freestyle relay en route to another SMU relay win (7:16.71). All three relay times were NCAA B standards. The 200-yard medley relay and 800-yard freestyle relay times were the fastest by any league team this year.

This is Svendsen's second Swimmer of the Week award this season and the fourth of her career.
