SMU National Championships

While watching UCLA win the women's volleyball National Championship Saturday night, they mentioned it is UCLA's 108th team NCAA championship.

This fact reminded me of when UCLA had all of their teams wear a different color C in their UCLA logo after they won their 100th (representing the Roman numeral for 100) a few years ago.

Since then, I have had the idea SMU could wear a different color M in the same way when we win our 1000th team championship. We have a way to go though...

Football claims three, but we all know it's really just one (1935). We don't have a men's or women's basketball title either.

As for the "other sports", we have had great soccer and swimming programs for both genders for years, but haven't been able to claim any titles yet.

The newer sports like equestrian and rowing obviously don't have any either.

Based on some research, our total is currently sitting at 5 NCAA team National Championships:

1 - Football (1935)
3 - Men's Track And Field (Outdoor 1983, 1986; Indoor 1983)
1 - Men's Golf (1954)

So, it will be a few years until we get to 1000.

Pretty sure the Women's Golf Team won a National Chamionship back in the early 80's. 1981 or 82 maybe. Kyle o'brien was on the team.

Not according to the all-knowing wiki.

Methodist has 15 Division III women's golf titles though, so maybe we could claim some of those!

I believe Kyle O'Brien led the team to national title in '79. Believe she is the golf coach at Baylor after playing on LPGA tour (was Rookie of the Year)

Yes. SMU did in fact win the 1979 national title, but the confusion is because women's golf was not an NCAA-sanctioned sport until 1982.

The SMU title is an Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) title - but I think it should count towards our 1000.

From the press release when she was elected to SMU's Hall of Fame:

Kyle O'Brien Stevens ('80) - former All-American SMU women's golf player, claimed medalist honors and led SMU to the team title at the 1979 AIAW National Championships; 2003 inductee into the National Golf Coaches Association Player Hall of Fame
