The 2012 class looks pretty solid as expected - obviously the big moment today will be a confirmation of the signing of Michael King.

Hopefully the day will be filled with good news!

Go Ponies!

FYI - the national ESPN rankings:

King - 37
Lujano - 117
Vazquez - 74
Short - 141

ESPN also lists the following player as committed to SMU:

Derek Schrick (MF, Kansas City, Sporting KC, No. 66 ESPN National)

Definitely a great class!

If you look at our results over the last few years you will realize that the problem with this program is not with the recruits. It is with the coaches who aren't able to take top level talent and get top level results.

GO PONIES!!!

King, Lujano, Vazquez, Short, and Schrick have all signed their NLIs according to topdrawer.

They also list another signed recruit - Brenden Lee (a defender from Frisco Centennial who plays for Solar)

Yes - he is on the U17 National Team Residency Roster.

(May 16, 2011)

Michael King had his pick of the litter. He's a class club player whose stock has continued to rise over the past couple years.

Picked for the spring U.S. U17 Men's National Team Residency roster, King is an athletic defender at 6-foot-2 who has shown maturation in his game.

College programs nationwide have taken notice, but King has zeroed his sights in on one, making a verbal commitment to SMU for the 2012 season.

"The final colleges that I chose from were Tulsa, North Carolina, Michigan, Wake Forest and SMU," said King, the No. 29 ranked player in our Top 100. "I committed to SMU because they have had a good soccer program for the past couple years, it's a good academic institution and is close to home."

I saw that. I wonder if we are going to expand our recruiting base to include kids in the east. To do so, may be too expensive for a non-rev sport, which I assume has a fairly rigid recruiting budget. Howeve, we could recruit the most highly rated eastern recruits to see if there is any interest in going south. Quite a few of the Texas kids go east to maryland, duke, North Carolina, etc.

Nice! How does this class stack up against prior years?

Looks like Akron cleaned up with 5 star top 20 players from Texas. As I recall they signed 3. We have a ways to go.

As far as the rankings go it's better than some of the recent classes - the depth especially.

Of course, the Castillo/Derschang/Barnes class still has the potential to be one of the best of the recent era in actual on-field results.

mustangbill67 is right though - we still aren't really in the same league as the Akrons and top ACC teams, but at least we are showing signs of getting up there. It would be great to get to the point where top 10 recruits and senior national team candidates are seriously looking at SMU.

We won't get those type of recruits until we get a national championship level coach.

GO PONIES!!!

Agreed. We should not lose top players from Texas to any other soccer program.
