Women's Swimming - NCAA Championships

Postby DanFreibergerForHeisman » Thu Mar 15, 2012 11:17 am

The NCAA Championships are off to a great start for the Mustangs!

SMU had the 8th best time (out of 19 teams) in the 200 freestyle relay prelims. SMU's time was 1:28.48 which is significantly better than our qualifying time of 1:29.26. Awesome!

The finals are tonight.

It looks like the only other item of interest from the afternoon session is a 14th place finish in the 400 medley relay prelims. SMU came in with a 3:34.10 (slightly off the qualification time of 3:32.77).

SMU finished 8th in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:29.30.

Stanford won with a pool record (1:26.85).

That was cool though - we were just in an NCAA final with Stanford, Cal, Texas, Arizona, Auburn, Tennessee, and Missouri - the way it should be!

Congratulations to Nina Rangelova, Genevieve Konicke, Monika Babok, and Isabella Arcila!

The swimmers just got their awards - nice NCAA trophies! Good for them.

The next three events are the 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley, and 50 freestyle - there aren't any SMU swimmers in those.

The next event of interest will be the 400 medley relay - SMU is in the B finals.

I guess the hope is the top schools take most of the points in the individual events so SMU will still be sitting in the top ten (or at least close) by the end of the first day of competition.

BTW - I will admit to knowing very little about swimming meets.

If somebody can explain why SMU had swimmers eligible (and listed on the psych sheet) for the 500 free and 200 IM today but didn't take any times I would appreciate it.

I assume it isn't to rest for other events. You only live once, right?

SMU finished 8th in the B finals - which puts us at 16th overall. Our time was 3:35.47.

We got off to a great start (we were second to Stanford after the first leg), but fizzled as the event went on.

Still a great effort - especially to be in a heat at the NCAA Championships with Stanford, Georgia, Florida, Penn State, Missouri, and the like.

I assume the NCAA website will have overall standings tonight so we can see where SMU stands.

After seeing Auburn's natatorium today, I am now 100% in agreement with Water Pony, etc.

We really need (and deserve) something like that. Wow.

Best wishes to the Mustangs tomorrow!
