Women's Soccer - Spring 2012

Postby DanFreibergerForHeisman » Sat Mar 24, 2012 11:24 am

The first spring game is today at 2pm at Westcott against Midwestern State. It will be interesting to see if there is anything remotely newsworthy.

SMU gets the spring off to a nice start with a 5-0 victory today over Midwestern State. Nice crowd too - probably 250 or so.

Goals by (I believe) Scovill, Lewis, Elliott, Bartol, and Redman.

Bodden played around the first 70 minutes and Stewart played the final 20 in goal.

Starting back four was Smith-Bass-Larson-Hartweck left to right.

How good is our team? When I was there, the team was pretty new and they weren't very good. Given the success of the men's team, I hope the girls kick some ...

I was impressed by the team play especially on the offensive end. The forwards and midfields did a good job both possessing and attacking. It was warm and we only had 1 sub, but the team played hard the entire 90 minutes which speaks to their conditioning. Even thought the opponent was not great, I think the team did a good job breaking the rust off.

Obviously the team was a bit rusty with it being the first spring game and all. I do agree the team showed great effort. Even with only 12 outfield players available things didn't really get lackluster until the last 10 minutes or so.

Playing the first spring game only one week removed from spring break it certainly wouldn't have been unreasonable to expect little more than a glorified conditioning session but the team really did show a lot of energy which was nice to see.

The defense looked decent - although to be fair they really were not tested too much. There was one scary moment with a late back pass from Larson which Bodden did well to deflect for a corner, but that is why you play these games so you can get the communication worked out with the new keeper and center backs before the games matter.

Offensively things were a bit ragged with a lot of missed passes, etc. but you expect that early in the spring. Even so, we could have easily scored 8 or 9 with some better finishing.

Scovill had the goal of the game. Redman showed some good hustle to get on the end of a wide cross by Lewis - and Scovill finished Redman's cross with a diving header. Scovill was actually denied a second headed goal when a ball beat the keeper but unfortunately hit another SMU player near the goal line.

It was really nice to see Redman get a goal - hopefully that will break the ice.

Up next is TCU on April 6 - which should be about as contested as you can expect in a spring game which will be fun.

A five-sentence release from SMU! (although it was 2-0 at the half)

It's good to see some coverage at least.

That's "coverage"? You gave far more information (and thanks for that). Then again, you're also the only one who told us about next year's freshman class.

Do you work for SMU? You should.

Did we sign any goalies? Sure hope so, and at least one of them had better be ready right away.
