Women's Soccer - Spring Game vs. OSU

Postby DanFreibergerForHeisman » Thu Apr 12, 2012 10:28 pm

SMU continues its spring season in Stillwater Saturday at 1pm against Oklahoma State. The Cowgirls are 4-1-1 on their spring, with the draw and loss both coming on days where they played two matches. They have not conceded any goals in either of their full-team spring matches (against Baylor and Arkansas).

The game Saturday is their final spring game, so we should expect to get their top effort. OSU still has the majority of their team intact from their NCAA quarterfinals team from last season. The only big losses are defender Melinda Mercado who was a first-team All-American and a WPS draft pick, and Krista Lopez who was their second leading scorer last season. They return keeper Adrianna Franch who was also a first-team All-American.

Saturday will be a nice test for the Mustangs. So far, SMU hasn't really been challenged too much this spring while piling up a 9-0 goal differential against Midwestern State and TCU.

I'm in Atlanta for the next 10 days, or I'd drive over for the game.

FYI - the start time of the OSU game has been shifted up to noon to try to beat the weather Saturday afternoon.

Just a bit of info - 1-0 OSU today.

Can't imagine it was a great day on the pitch. But they dodged the weather and have safely returned to the hilltop.

Thanks for the update August - have been checking the various facebook and twitter accounts and websites for both schools.

I'm sure it was windy during the game, but thankfully they got it in and were able get back to Dallas safely before getting caught up in any nasty weather.

In the grand scheme of things, I guess 1-0 isn't that bad.

Agreed. Neither school posts stats for Spring so we won't know the vitals. I'm a little concerned because they lost a lot of their backfield to graduation and still we couldn't put one in. But without stats, it's all conjecture.

OSU did put out a three-sentence release:

http://www.okstate.com/sports/w-soccer/recaps/041412aaa.html

Not much there obviously, other than the goal was scored "late in the first" by a freshman forward (she had 3 goals in 15 appearances during the regular season).

As far as us not scoring, at least Adrianna Franch was in goal for them the entire game.

Oklahoma State put out a release and SMU didn't?
Do we only do releases when we win? That's really bush-league.

Couldn't agree more. Neither coach (mens or womens) gives out results. Perhaps 'stealth soccer' needs to be played on a 'stealth soccer field'. That way we can get started on the IPF.

Apparently.

Typical but not nearly as bush league as the HC refusing to give an interview after our one-and-done in CUSA Championships. That did not go unnoticed by other schools, BTW.

Obviously both soccer coaches have SO in their back pocket and can do whatever they feel like without repercussion.

The lack of information this spring has been amazing. There has been zero information from the men. Zero. They didn't even announce a time for the New Mexico game.

I tend to give Tim a bit more leeway since he actually makes the tournament now, but the lack of information from Brent always makes one think he is trying to hide something.

There is definitely truth to the accusation the women's team only releases good information. I would think they would want to publicize a 1-0 loss - on the road in trying conditions no less - to a team that was in the NCAA quarterfinals this year, but what do I know...

It's not clear what Erwin has on Orsini, but even you must realize that McClements doesn't "have Orsini in his pocket." McClements get a pass here, because he realizes spring games are exhibitions and doesn't tout wins or losses, but this "press only when we win" stuff the women's team pulls is very Little League.

Next year, Erwin needs to let us know which games his team will win, and we'll buy tickets only to those games.
