Brunstrom/Marx Top No. 5 Fyrstenberg/Matkowski At Wimbledon

June 27, 2012

LONDON (SMU) - SMU men's tennis alum Johan Brunstrom and his doubles partner Philipp Marx defeated the No. 5 duo of Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski 6-4, 6-2, 6-7, 7-6 in the opening round of Wimbledon on Wednesday. Brunstrom and Marx face David Marrero and Andreas Seppi in the second round.

Last week, Brunstrom qualified for the Swedish Olympic team along with doubles countryman Robert Lindstedt.

Brunstrom has advanced to tournament finals 10 times in his doubles career, winning the Swiss Open on clay in Gstaad, Switzerland in August 2010. His latest final came at the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in Newport, R.I., in July 2011.

Brunstrom was an All-American at SMU in doubles in 2001 and 2002 as well as in singles in 2003. He won the 2001 ITA Indoor Doubles Championship with Jon Wallmark. The duo was also NCAA Doubles runner-up with in 2001, the same year the team made the NCAA Final Four. Brunstrom then teamed with Eric Cohn and the duo finished runner-up at the 2002 NCAA Indoor Championship. Brunstrom was just the sixth SMU men's tennis player to become a three-time All-American.
