SMU Women’s Soccer: Mustangs Claim Home-Opening Win Over Oral Roberts, 2-1
Robinson, Scovill Score In First Win Of Season For SMU
Aug. 24, 2012
DALLAS (SMU) - Coming off of a severe knee injury is one of the most challenging ordeals a high-level athlete can work through. SMU's Taylor Robinson made it seem easy on Friday evening.
The junior, who sat out all of last season with a knee injury, scored SMU's first goal of the season and the opener in the Mustangs' 2-1 victory over Oral Roberts on Friday night at Westcott Field.
Oral Roberts attempted to clear the ball out of its defensive-third, but Mallory Baum intercepted the clearance and immediately found Robinson streaking through the middle of the pitch, where the midfielder drilled home a goal at the 25:12 mark from about 22 yards out.
"She's hit a few of those in training here in the last week or two, so I think she felt pretty good about her ability to strike that ball," Head Coach Chris Petrucelli said.
Overall, SMU dominated in possession and in scoring chances, including outshooting the Golden Eagles 32-6.
SMU struck again at the 81:50 mark off of a header directly in front of goal by Kenzie Scovill, who was fed a perfect ball byCourtney Smith from the left side. Smith had just returned to action and immediately received a throw-in, which led to her perfect cross.
"Courtney is a weapon," Petrucelli stated. "She serves such a good ball with her left foot. Anytime she gets a chance to serve it's dangerous."
Freshman Shannon Moroney made her first-career start in goal for the Mustangs, and recorded four saves, all coming in the second half.
SMU takes on Arkansas to finish of its weekend on Sunday night at 7 p.m. CT at Westcott Field. The Mustangs will look to avenged their 2-1 defeat to the Razorbacks last season. Tickets are available by calling 214-SMU-GAME or by visiting http://www.smumustangs.com/tickets.
