W-Soccer: SMU vs. Arkansas

Postby DanFreibergerForHeisman » Sat Aug 25, 2012 8:05 pm

SMU is back in action Sunday night against Arkansas at 7pm.

Arkansas is 3-0-0 this year, with three tight one-goal wins against Austin Peay, Texas and Missouri State. The SMU game will be their first road contest of the season.

Hopefully, SMU will be able to take the next step and turn the impressive offensive ball movement from the ORU game into some goals.

A fantastic display by SMU, as the Mustangs beat Arkansas 4-0!

Scovill scored two, and Elliott and Redman also scored.

SMU was in control for the majority of the game. Arkansas didn't get their first shot on goal until very late. The game was also pretty physical - it was great to see SMU standing up to anything coming at them and also dishing it out as necessary. Both coaches took yellows but the officials never let anything too ridiculous happen on the field.

Obviously, when all three starting forwards score it is a nice day for the offense. The back four was rock solid all night, and the midfield was also very active and won a ton of challenges.

Overall, a very nice effort by the whole team on both sides of the ball.

FYI - Petrucelli's yellow came after arguing (justifiably) a non-call after Arkansas flat out tripped Shelby Redman in the box. At that point, the game was still 1-0 so it was a pretty big decision.

Arkansas' coach picked up a yellow after basically losing control after about four or five borderline challenges by SMU didn't get called. By that point it was 4-0 and I'm sure it was more frustration.

Taylor Robinson kind of set the tone with a rough challenge just a minute into the game. There was some chippy stuff going on away from the ball, but overall nothing malicious. Just a lot of hard, physical play. SMU has never really shown any lack of toughness, but it's always nice to know it is there if it is necessary.
