Mustangs Fall Short Against Texas State

DALLAS (SMU) - Freshman Abbey Bybel had three kills and a block in the third set, sparking a rally for the Mustangs who pulled to within one point, 20-19, after trailing Texas State by as many as eight. The Bobcats (5-5) held off the charge for a 3-0 win (28-26, 25-13, 25-23) over SMU (2-6) in Moody Coliseum.
Caroline Young had eight of SMU's 16 kills in the first set, and SMU took a four-point lead early, 9-5, stretching it to as many as five. The Bobcats erased the five-point lead late in the first set, and completed the comeback with a 28-26 win to claim the early advantage.
Texas State kept the momentum in the second set, taking a 12-6 lead. The Bobcats never let the Mustangs back in the set, taking a 2-0 lead with the 25-13 win, hitting .360 with 13 digs.
Bybel finished with five kills, hitting .400 in the match, and Young led the Mustangs with 11 kills. SMU will face Auburn in the final match of the SMU Doubletree Classic Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in Moody Coliseum.
