Redman Scores In 87th Minute To Send Game Into Overtime

Sept. 14, 2012

WACO, Texas (SMU) - Shelby Redman tried to play the hero role for the second-straight game, but this time SMU could not come away with the victory, losing to Baylor 2-1 at Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field in Waco, Texas on Friday night.

SMU drops to 3-4-0 heading into what will be its first home contest in three weeks on Sunday against Oklahoma.

Redman's goal was set up after a corner kick by Courtney Smith. Smith sent a cross into the box and found Redman, who snuck the ball inside the post. Baylor had been outshooting SMU by a large margin in the second frame, but momentum quickly went to the Mustangs after more heroics from Redman.

"I think she's just gaining confidence," Head Coach Chris Petrucelli said.

Confidence was instilled into the rest of the team, and the Mustangs feel as though they should have managed a tie against the Bears (7-1-1).

"It's disappointing," Petrucelli said. "We could have come out with at least a tie. We had momentum. We were in it and just let down there at the end."

Baylor provided many more scoring opportunities throughout the game, including outshooting SMU 17-2 after the first half. The Bears couldn't find the back of the net until the 61st minute, when Vic Hoffman netted one from 24-yards out off her left foot.

Redman's goal boosted SMU, but Baylor kept piling on shots, and a pretty collection of passes set up a goal by Hanna Gilmore in the 107th minute to seal the win for the Bears.

Smith ranked 22nd in the nation in assists per game heading into the contest, and tallied her fifth of the year on Redman's goal. SMU goalkeeperLauryn Bodden collected a career-high six saves.

SMU will take on Oklahoma at 7 p.m. CT at Westcott Field on Sunday. The Mustangs are 4-2-1 all-time against the Sooners, and will aim to improve that record. Tickets are available by calling 214-SMU-GAME or by visiting www.smumustangs.com/tickets.
